Not a business See how we get on using new pieces of kit and what we do to make our trips away more fun. We recently changed to an Eriba Touring Familia 310. 🌊 Late September Sunshine by the Sea 🌊

We've been really looking forward to a long weekend by the sea at Whitby for several weeks now. It's been there winking at us, seemingly so far off in the distance. It arrived and then came and went in a flash but what a fantastic weekend we had‼ It was definitely worth the wait but now we are back at home and wondering how that happened 😳

We set off on Thursday mid morning and arrived in the afternoon and quickly got set up. With just the electric cable to plug in, fresh water to sort out and an outdoor rug to pin down, there wasn't much setup to do at all. We quickly transferred clothes and food from the car into Enrico and we were soon on the coast path into Whitby.

We had a weekend of walking, great food and meeting up with friends and we'll be posting a few posts, stories and reels throughout the week so you can see what we got up to. The weekend was full of fun and excitement including us attending the J.B.M.D. event at Whitby Brewery with the amazing Whitby Krampus Run. We'll be posting more about this also. A shout out to the ladies we met from Batley in The House of Memento Mori - it was lovely to meet you both (Wendy and Janet).

We only stayed at Whitby Holiday Park for a few days in the summer and we could have definitely stayed a lot longer. The same can be said for this trip too. The site was absolutely packed this time and it is fair to say it was quieter when we were there in the summer. Maybe it was the good weather forecast? Despite this, it was lovely and quiet and great to drift off to sleep to the sound of the sea.

We're getting out the calendar and looking to see when we can book again for next year 🦇🖤 Are you planning on revisiting any favourite sites?

🌳 Too much shade or not enough shade? 🌳

When you book some time away, you are always hoping to have good weather and see some sun. This summer has seen some ridiculous temperatures and that sunny open pitch may just have been a bit hard work at times.

We seem to have booked some very sunny weeks away, not just this year but in previous years too. We remember booking a pitch for this year because we knew it got some lovely evening sun. We were sat on our pitch eyeing it up enviously so we decided to book this particular pitch. The week we arrived was sweltering, even in April. It felt like the hottest pitch on the site and seemed to get sun most of the day. Our friend was staying on the same site and, rather ironically, she was on the pitch we had had previously when we were weighing up this pitch. We had to keep hauling our chairs over and going to sit in the shade on her pitch as ours had none!

We had another stay at a site in Burford and the only pitch left was under the trees and we felt like we didn't see any sunlight all day. It was a truly awful site though and one we will never return to for many reasons. Even all the planes flying over to Brize Norton was not enough to keep us entertained (we couldn't see them properly because of all the trees)!

Lots of people don't like trees over pitches because of sap on top of awnings and caravan roofs. We've also brought home some interesting insects and lots of strange pollen and seeds before now. We can't imagine what it must be like under an oak tree with all the acorns raining down - or a rowan tree full of berries!

It got us thinking, is there really such a thing as too much shade or not enough shade? If you are choosing a pitch, is shade something you look for or do you like a nice open pitch? Have you ever chosen a pitch and then ended up regretting your choice? We've only booked one site for next year and we are hoping we've made the right choice of pitch now for when we have booked!

‼ Controversial Opinion Incoming ‼

We've seen many reports over the last few years about campervans/motorhomes staying in car parks. We've avoided posting about it until now because it's a very emotive subject for some. We had a conversation online with a lady this morning and just couldn't understand her reasoning for not using campsites. Therefore, we thought we'd see what you think?

We have no problem with people who park up somewhere and use a parking space overnight, say, arriving at 6.00 pm and departing before 8.00 am as long as it is for one night and done responsibly. Obviously, car parks have people parking close to one another so there is no fire break! Many say that they spend their money in local bars and restaurants so there should be no need for them to cook.

The lady told us that they only need toilets and showers so the price campsites charge is too much as some were nearly a hundred quid a night in peak season. We can find places offering full facilities, toilets, showers, recycling, fresh water, EHU, CDP, for twenty quid a night. She also told us it was not worth staying on a site as many don't allow arrival until 3/4.00 pm and departure at 10.00 am. We said we don't stay on sites that require you to leave at 10.00 am and we only stay at sites where the latest departure is 11.00 am. We also said we had never ever seen a site with arrivals at 3/4.00 pm and, honestly, we have not. She suggested we might not have the camping experience that she has but we have both been camping since we were kids, and have camped all over the UK. Ultimately, we think the research is what is lacking here.

We do think that there are so many inexpensive options for campervans and motorhomes and they have far more options than caravanners or tenters. There are Pubstops, plenty of places with car parks with facilities that allow overnight stays (we know of one at Lytham-St-Annes), Britstops and some new aires too.

What we don't get is the attitude of some that it should be a given that they can stay anywhere they want. What are your thoughts on this?

❓ Which is the worst scenario❓

There's no doubt that great weather can totally make a trip. On our little island, the weather is very changeable so there is usually some bad weather on most trips. It can be particularly hard arriving and setting up in bad weather but, also, packing up in bad weather can be equally rubbish‼

Which do you think is the worst scenario for you? Arriving to a day of rain when you have to set up or having a really rainy day when you are leaving? We don't like either but think setting up when it's rainy is far better than packing up in the rain.

Let's have your thoughts on this one and any stories of awful setups/packups.

❓ How to tour on a budget❓

There's no doubt the cost of everything has rocketed. Unless you are well off, it can be difficult to balance the books in terms of paying your bills and paying for the upkeep of your caravan - insurance, servicing, repairs and replacing parts due to wear and tear. Whether you have a caravan, motorhome, campervan or whatever, you want to make the most of it and get away when you can but, along with household expenses, the cost of pitch fees, eating out, entrance fees for tourist attractions has also increased. Here are our top tips for touring on a budget:-

◼️ Many caravan parks are releasing their booking calendar for 2027 at the moment and, along with this, lots of them have offers on pitch fees if you book now;
◼️ If your insurance premium has gone up, use comparison sites for quotes and haggle with your insurer;
◼️ Use a petrol prices app to check out where the nearest petrol station is with the best price for the fuel type you need;
◼️ Cancel any Club memberships you aren't using but do bear in mind that their smaller sites network can offer some great VFM sites;
◼️ Follow Martin Lewis MSE page and sign up for his newsletter. There are often FOC day passes for National Trust and reduced membership offers for English Heritage;
◼️ In one of the spring editions, Gardener's World Magazine has a pass included for access to lots of gardens with two for one admission;
◼️ Save on the price of buying coffee by getting a coffee machine and enjoying a cup when you get back to base. You can often get machines included FOC if you subscribe to monthly coffee pods. If you were going to buy the coffee anyway then it is worth the subscription. Once the subscription ends, happy days;
◼️ If you are looking for a new expensive item of kit (new awning for example) then start looking from October onwards for the best price. You can, also, get some great equipment bargains via Facebook Marketplace.
