It’s been about 9 years since my last visit to and whilst it is a little tired compared to some of the other Museums the Toon has to offer, it’s definitely still a good FREE local day out, especially if you’ve got kids or grown ups into STEM, vehicles, space or Newcastle history. There’s lots to look around and many of the exhibits are hands on and interactive, we were definitely surprised at how much was accessible to our littlest explorer.

Personally, it probably works best as a local/community museum rather than somewhere I’d hugely travel for because I still think the and have the edge for us but that said, places like this absolutely deserve support and donations if you’re able to. Also if you’re wondering why I have hardly any photos… there were THREE school trips in at the same time 😂 which probably tells you everything about how popular it is with local schools and why it’s worth donating 🤍

📍Danny Lodge National Park Centre, YO21 2NB

There’s a reason why I’m on first name terms with the staff at and I don’t think it needs much explaining. I feel so lucky that this amazing FREE space is available on our doorstep, yet so many people I talk to don’t know it’s here or how good it is?!

There is so much to do and see on the site, the play area is perfect for all ages and there are fixed trails galore as well as lots of event trails and sessions (the tamper trail in and around Crow’s wood is accessible with a pushchair). Today we enjoyed the celebrations for 50 years of Sutton Bank (photos from the play area are from a previous visit as it was soooooo busy!🤍) there’s also loads of indoor activities including an indoor climbing wall and exhibition space.

If you’re looking for something free to do in the moors this one is definitely worth a visit and can be bolted on to so many other great experiences and trips in the local area if your children just fancy a play.

We went to see The Detective Dog at with and it is such a great show for little ones. 🤍

If you have a Julia Donaldson fan this is right up your street. Nell the detective dog is fab and the whole room was completely drawn in from the start. The show itself is really interactive with lots of audience participation and laughs, we loved Nell bounding around the audience and playing catch with the bounce away ball!

The actors were brilliant. The show is full of energy and one thing we really noticed was how well the BSL and overall inclusivity was done with lots of opportunities to join in and sign and there was also free to use ear defenders for the show and as always a near by break out space with mats and cushions.

The icing on the cake was the meet and greet at the end of the show with the chance to give Nell a pat and the interactive sensory boxes ✨

There are still tickets for tomorrow if you are looking for something to do 🤍

📍Skinningrove beach, TS13 4BJ

They say a change is as good as a rest and it’s been so long since we’ve visited here and despite the fact there’s so much choice along the amazing coastline of the North East and Yorkshire, we’re humbled to say we do usually default to places like Saltburn with ‘a bit more going on’, but in the half terms places like Saltburn get so busy, parking gets stressful (and can be expensive 😬) there’s queues for ice creams and although I do love the hustle and bustle of a seaside town in nice weather, it was absolutely gorgeous to have this beach pretty much to ourselves (and with free parking 👀).
There’s a lovely little coffee trailer with their own seating area, lots of spots for picnics and walking routes for all ages and abilities between the two sides of the bay and places like Saltburn and Staithes along the Cleveland Way.
We even spotted a seal 🦭
Save this for next time you’re looking for a quiter alternative for a beach day 🏖️

📍Beacon Farm, YO22 5HS

I spotted this place in the winter last year when driving through Sneaton and I don’t know if we’ve stumbled on a hidden gem or been living under a rock, but one thing for sure is that this is a place we will be visiting lots this summer! What a place!

The nature trail and woodland area complete with dens, sculptures, mud kitchens and more is a wonderful place for an adventure and getting to see the cattle and goats before finishing off with a play in a brilliant adventure play area and obstacle course is 👌🏻

The tearooms offer lots of food and drink options, but the highlight of the show is of course the ice-cream made on site! I counted around 30 flavours, 3 of which were dairy free 🙌 and 4 ice creams cost less than £15!

If you’ve not been here, this is one to save for a sunny day (it’s also really close to Ruswarp’s miniature railway and other local attractions if you’re wanting to make a full day of it!)🍦✨

Most family days cost £70+… this one cost us just £24.50 and admission is even cheaper with a Leedscard!

This is one of our go to days out because you can make it as much or as little as you want. You can just do the indoor bit (perfect for a rainy day with a crocodile, fish, scorpions, butterflies, birds, meerkats, marmosets and more!) or make more of a day with a trip around the tropical gardens outside or over the road to Roundhay park which is HUGE and has ride on trains, duck ponds, play areas etc. There is a big cafe onsite but we’ve also eaten at the pub directly opposite and which is just a short walk along from the park, both of which we’d highly recommend!

itself is not massive, but that’s perfect for small kids who can walk themselves the whole way round, so many of the enclosures have child height windows and view points that make it a real adventure! 🙌

If you’re trying to find things to do without spending a fortune, this is such a good one to have saved.

Hands up if you visited here as a kid? We met with friends who had forgotten its existed until they stepped into the animal barn and the nostalgia hit!

£6.70 for 3 tickets because babes in arms go free. It’s a great place for a first trip to the farm too because it is on the smaller side which is perfect for babies and tots but there’s also loads to keep the older ones busy and who doesn’t love an opportunity to pet and feed the animals? 🐏

As a local visit; it’s great value. I would recommend packing a picnic as IMO the cafe is small and can be quite hit and miss for food and stock. The roleplay village is also already looking quite tired despite being one of the newer bits but it is still a great option for colder days.
