BOB

Bob is 85. He was admitted due to kidney problems. A jolly old chap who makes no complaints, always smiling and friendly, calls me by my name, the epitome of patience with a personality that lights up the room 😍

He inquired about getting a sick note when he gets discharged. Curious why someone in his 80s would require one, I can’t help but ask.

Apparently he works 3 days a week in a farm as a potato sorter. He manually picks and sorts the good and the bad potatoes as they come through a machine. He said he thoroughly enjoys it and would like to continue working there for as long as he can. One is amazed at how someone senior can still be in employment and loving the work that he does 😱♥️ He is definitely a good potato.

Reflecting on other much younger people who rely and abuse the system for benefits I must say he is one admirable gentleman 👍🏼 So I made sure I hand it over to ensure he gets his sick note 💕

DIABETES

As I was preparing for a training on Diabetes Management I had a meeting with one of our Diabetes Specialist Nurses. I have known her for a long long time, in fact since I came to work in my hospital 16 years ago. I haven’t seen her for a long time and had been pleasantly surprised to find her still working but doing mostly remote patient reviews.

She is an expert in her field of practice, both endocrinology and diabetes. What I thought would be a half hour meeting stretched to nearly two hours. Our conversation opened a whole world of information for me about Diabetes. A condition that may be common but often baffles me.

I mentioned that I had a text from my GP to have a blood test for Hba1c as I previously had a high result that may indicate I am Diabetic. What was surprising was I had that high test result in 2018, ages ago. Then suddenly they booked me for a repeat blood test 8 years later 🤔 oh well.

Anyway this led to having a on-the-spot consult from an expert about my symptoms and my diet. I should have a low glycaemic index diet to better control my glucose levels which led me to further research on this dietary regime. She also gave me a complete blood glucose test kit so I can self monitor.

Coming away from that meeting I felt I learned a lot and had been well looked after as well. It has given me a new drive towards a better and healthier life 😍👍🏼

MY PATIENT, BOB 💕

Let me tell you about my patient Bob 😊

He is in his 80s and was admitted with kidney problems. He stayed in my ward for quite some time and had become a permanent fixture as you enter the bay.

He has been through a lot - bleeding, clots, pain. I felt so sorry for him but I never heard him complain. He was the gentliest, most soft spoken and cordial gentleman. He would sit on his bed reading his book or quietly dozing, never a burden to anyone.

I only took care of him a couple of times but he never forgot my name. Always greeting me as I pass by with his sweet smile and twinkly eyes 😊 that it became my routine to say hello to him whenever I am at work. He always has a ready laugh and would shake my hand everytime. He would thank me for every little thing I do for him.

Yesterday I saw him walking towards his bed swinging his frame around showing off his strength and agility then he started laughing at my surprised face 😂 He was so excited when the team told him he will be going home soon

Then today he was discharged. We ran after him as he was being pushed towards the lift to say our goodbyes and wish him well. He had tears in his eyes as he hugged us and bid us goodbye, thanking us endlessly 😣 Our hearts were heavy as we hugged him back and wished him well.

It was bittersweet ♥️ we were happy and sad to see him go. We loved to look after him and we will miss his smiling face and personal greetings.

Oftentimes we meet patients who are extraordinary because of the way they made us feel appreciated. Patients like our lovely Bob who will linger in our memories long after he has gone home 💕

NEW WORK SHOES 💕

Finally decided to lay my more than 5 years old skechers work shoes to rest. It has been very well used, protected my feet comfortably for so long. But it now has holes everywhere and so worn its quite lopsided so I had to let it go 😞

Shoe searching I went after. Leaned towards skechers as I always do, I am quite a loyal customer for a long time. They are comfortable and bouncy and do fit what I need for shoes that I will be wearing for 13 long hours running around at work. Plus the and I do get myself a good bargain 😊

This time however, none of the designs seem right. I have a large bunion on my left foot that hurts if the shoes don’t fit well 😣

So sauntered over to nearby two minutes to closing their doors. The lady there allowed us in if we promised to make quick decisions. She recommended the and oh my! It fitted my feet like a glove, has air holes on the sides to let the feet breath and has soft material all around to fit around my pesky bunion 🦶Light as a feather and very aesthetic. Making the choice took less than two minutes really 😊

I have worn them to work for the first time yesterday and boy were they just perfect 👍🏼 Totally recommend this shoes for anyone who works long hours and have problematic feet 😁

WHATNOT GIVEAWAY 😍

Fiji Face Balmy Cream 💚

This morning I scraped the bottom of my face cream and mentally added it to my shopping list. The weather here is such that you cannot do without moisturiser on your face or else it will feel dry and itchy, like a rough bumpy road 😫 so yes it’s a must!

Then the mailman knocked on the door and delivered my 3rd giveaway from . This is a live selling platform I am kinda addicted to at the moment. I get lots of great deals there and of course, the giveaways 😍

So I just received the Fiji Face Balmy Cream for free! I looked it up in ebay and it costs around £27 and it arrived just when I needed it! What are the chances 😁

ST. BRIGID 🌸 Mary of the Gael
The origin of the term “Brides”
📍Dublin, Ireland

During our short stay we would walk the few blocks to the bus stop as its cheaper than taking a cab to the city, we pass by this little grotto with a well along the road. It is a shrine for St. Brigid, one of Ireland’s patron saints.

St. Brigid was a model for women of every age. She embodied peace and quiet strength in a time of conflict. She was so revered that gentlemen started calling their sweethearts and life partners ‘Brides’ in her honour. A tradition that continues to this day 💕

It’s a small quiet area with a statue and a stone well that is believed to have healing powers. An old pilgrimage site where locals hang coloured ribbons and leave messages on the nearby rag tree.

One noticed that despite the noise of the busy street right next to it, once one enters the little gated sanctuary the vibe shifts. Suddenly its calm and serene. All one hears is the gentle bubbling of the running water from the well. It was a very nice feeling 😍 like you want to linger longer and enjoy the moment of peace 🙏

While walking to work I forgot something I needed at home 🤪 just one of my senior moments! So made the short but sweaty walk back to retrieve it as the midday sun is banging down on me 🌞. However I did notice that one of the yards along the way has beautiful peony and rose bushes, prettily pink and in full bloom. There were birds too fighting over the seed boxes. I had to stop and admire them even as I am out of breath in my rush to get back 😓.

Thoughts for the day 🤔

Despite the busy bustlings in our lives it is very important that we stop and smell the flowers 🌸💕 and appreciate the beauty of our natural world 😍

THE AFRICAN HEAT DOME 🥵🌞🔥

It was a sweltering 34 degrees these past few days. Hot indoors, blazingly hotter outdoors particularly under the sun. Now that is a strange reaction coming from one who originated from the tropics. But 16 years I have lived in the UK and never had summer this hot!!

What is going on ????

According to the weatherman we are currently experiencing an African heat dome, also known as Saharan heat or plumes of African heat. This happens when a large mass of extremely hot air builds over North Africa and sweeps across Europe. It is described as akin to a lid covering a boiling pot and not letting any of the hot air out, hence the dome.

So what should we do?
Hydrate! Hydrate! Hydrate!

Stay in the shade, take a shower, wear lighter clothes and just chill.

Oh well, with a little patience. This too shall pass.
