Wish you'd been here! Another great morning at King's Road market. We met so many HIP readers and introduced the paper to many more. Among them were Jane with Rosie the parrot with their copy of the Hastings Independent. And another couple were caught planning their day with the ever-popular HIP list.

Too Few Bins or Public Apathy?

HIP volunteer Helena Jurriaanse shares her experience with rubbish:

"When I was faced with this early this morning, my first thought was that it was the former. But just twenty paces away, I found a completely empty bin - so now I believe it’s the latter.

I found this eyesore in St Leonard’s Gardens, which has been described as offering “a peaceful and idyllic setting for leisurely walks, picnics, and moments of relaxation. It provides a welcome respite from the bustle of daily life and serves as a popular destination for both locals and tourists seeking natural beauty and tranquillity in the heart of St Leonards-on-Sea.”

Well, that’s not what any visitors would have found here this morning. This detritus presents a health risk, a danger to wildlife and pets and is an insult to the Victorians who laid out the gardens.

The question is, should more sanctions be imposed on those who don’t dispose of their waste properly?"

Today, the community of King’s Road celebrated the opening of a new community space called the Green Arena. Tucked between King's Road Fish and Chip shop and Cinnamon Spice on King’s Road a surprising development has taken shape. The Green Arena is a new community space for young people to come together, socialise, learn new skills and create - it’s for everyone from the community and in the words of its founder ‘it’s a place for talent to thrive’. The Green Arena is the latest initiative from Progress Network - a Community interest company created by Jerome, Tony and Malcolm (pictured). The organisation aims to uplift, enrich, grow and support people through the power of connection, education and self-esteem. To date, the organisation has run football skills development sessions and fostered youth entrepreneurship with events and training.

Property developer Roost is proposing to cut down a lime tree in the ground of Gensing Manor in Dane Rd, St Leonards, allegedly to improve the sea view for purchasers of the flats it’s currently converting within the former language school.

The proposal, currently out to statutory consultation, would - according to nearby residents who have contacted their councillors, Amanda Jobson and Paula Warne, both from the Green party- destroy an important local visual amenity and natural habitat.
Responses to the planning consultation can be made at the link below before June 27th.

CORRECTION

In the 20th June edition of HIP we published an incorrect picture on page two in connection with our lead story, 'False Claims Spark Outrage and Fear." The image should have shown 67 Sedlescome Rd North, not 67 Sedlescome Rd South. We apologise to the owners of the two flats in the latter building for this error.
