After First Lady Fatima Maada Bio Called Her Scammer, International Community Recognise the Work of Rugiatu Neneh Koroma as Champion in the Fight Against Female Ge***al Mutilation (FGM) in Sierra leone.

At home, the debate is loud. Abroad, the verdict is clear.

After public remarks in which First Lady Fatima Maada Bio referred to Rugiatu Neneh Turay-Koroma as a “scammer,” many expected her work to be overshadowed. Instead, the international community has doubled down on recognition for Rugiatu Neneh Turay-Koroma’s decades-long fight against Female Ge***al Mutilation.

From Sierra Leone to the world,Rugiatu Neneh Turay-Koroma is known as a voice for Sierra Leonean women and girls. Through her organization, Amazonian Initiative Movement, she has rescued, educated, and empowered hundreds of young women. She has walked into communities where FGM was not something to talk or discuss about, sat with traditional leaders as key front liners to end FGM, and introduced a new path where girls go through the practice without harm and keep their bodies safe, their health, and their futures.

While political arguments play out in Freetown, international partners point to results. Schools built. Safe spaces opened. Former cutters trained in new livelihoods. Advocate for strengthened existing laws that will make Lives changed.

Supporters say the contrast is striking: at home she faces insults, abroad she receives standing ovations. For many Sierra Leoneans, especially women and girls, that contrast proves one thing — her work speaks louder than politics.

Rugiatu Neneh Turay-Koroma remains focused. “This is not about me,” she said at a recent forum. “This is about every girl who deserves to grow up well without fear or harm. If fighting for them makes me a target, I will keep standing. She said”

History often remembers who stood on the right side. Today, the international community is clear on where Rugiatu Neneh Turay-Koroma stands: as a champion, a protector, and a voice Sierra Leone cannot afford to silence.

The world is watching. The girls are counting on her.

Rugiatu Neneh Koroma received lifetime achievement award in London. First Lady Fatima Maada Bio we just want to let you know this woman here has being in this fight since the early 2000s, and she stood firm to zero tolerance on FGM in sierra leone, by doing so she introduced the Alternative Rite of Passage (Bondo without Harm/B|○○d). Because of her work, she has being recognised internationally with such an award.

PARLIAMENTARY COMMITTEE ON SPORTS SUMMONS NATIONAL SPORTS AUTHORITY (NSA) & MINISTRY OF SPORTS (MoS) FOR STATUS REPORT ON STADIUM REHABILITATION

The Parliamentary Committee on Sports, chaired by Hon. Rachel Mariatu Sesay Pessima from Port Loko District, summoned the leadership of the National Sports Authority (NSA) and the Ministry of Sports (MoS) to provide a status report on the long-awaited rehabilitation of the National Stadium by Chinese contractors.

The Chairperson Hon. Racheal Mariatu Sesay Pessima welcomed representatives from the NSA and the Ministry of Sports. She formally congratulated the new Executive Director of the NSA and underscored the importance of peace and collaboration between the NSA and the Ministry under his leadership.

“The purpose of this meeting is to exercise oversight on the current status of the National Stadium,” Hon. Pessima said. She reminded the witnesses that the stadium is the face of the nation and hosts the country’s major international games.

The Committee stressed out that all the procurement-related actions for the stadium renovation, including grants, must comply with the National Public Procurement Authority (NPPA) Act. Members emphasized the urgency with which the public expects completion of the project.

The Director of Sports in the Ministry of Sports Haroun Mustapha Korgie commended the Committee for convening the meeting and expressed appreciation for its earlier mediation to foster unity between the NSA, SLFA and the Ministry.

Deputy Executive Director of NSA Dr. Abdulraman Swaray said the stadium renovation is being carried out by Chinese contractors, with the NSA providing oversight. “We have been conducting regular inspections,” he said. He noted that the country has been disadvantaged by the current state of the stadium and that the Southern Arena Stadium is not certified for Class A international matches.

Dr. Swaray reported that the procurement process for the remaining works is at an advanced stage. He added that several components, including the basketball court and the hostels, have been completed. A partial handover of stadium facilities is scheduled for 30 June 2026.

The Director of Corporate Operations Alie Sesay, explained that the NSA has been engaging the Chinese contractors to secure written approval for the additional installation of plastic seats. Without that written approval, he said funding from the Chinese Government could not be released, which has delayed the installation of plastic seats.

He said the NSA is now seeking presidential approval to engage Chinese counterparts to obtain the required written authorization. He added that the technical team for the seat installation will comprise personnel from both China and Sierra Leone.

The Executive Director of the NSA Mohamed Alphaka Conteh Esq. said that completing the stadium has been his priority since assuming office. “I am always ready to work with the Committee,” he said, adding that parliamentary standing committees are key partners in ensuring MDAs succeed in project implementation.

He called on the Committee to support the NSA’s executive team with the necessary political and legislative action to complete the stadium. He informed the Committee that he had also engaged the Chinese Ambassador regarding the installation of the plastic seats.
