How you store information is as important as how you record it.

As our trainees mentioned that, making sure employers are aware of recorded incidents; and carefully storing details of these incidents are crucial.

For GDPR purposes recorded information in an accident/ incident book should be detached and stored to one’s personal (P) file, ensuring the reference numbers are synced

The HSE standards require that sterile components such as bandages, wipes, eye wash, and burn gels kept in first aid kits must always be within their expiry date.

However, the outer casing and non sterile items like scissors, tweezers and elastics wraps do not need to have an expiry date.

Some manufacturers may add on expiry dates for each individual kit based on the expiry date of the “soonest to be expired” sterile item within the kit.

Other manufacturers may mark expiry dates in the individually packaged sterile components so that they could be replaced one at a time instead of throwing away the entire kit into the bin.

HSE to tackle occupational asthma by inspecting motor vehicle repair firms

Aiming to tackle occupational asthma, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has launched 1000 targeted inspections of motor vehicle repair businesses across Great Britain.

This campaign will focus on workplaces that use isocyanate-containing paints and coatings — the leading cause of occupational asthma in the UK.

The HSE points out that many skilled vehicle paint sprayers develop this life-changing and debilitating disease each year, forcing them to leave their profession permanently. Once asthma develops, even small amounts of isocyanate exposure can trigger severe attacks, making continued work in the industry impossible for affected workers.

The aim will be to assess compliance with the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH), under which employers must prevent or control worker exposure to isocyanates using effective control measures and safe working procedures.

Employers must also verify these measures are working by arranging regular health surveillance and biological monitoring. Both are legally required for workers exposed to isocyanates.

Businesses found to be breaching COSHH may face improvement notices, prohibition notices or prosecution leading to unlimited fines.

Question:
What should we be doing in respect of safety of electrical cables in an office environment?

Answer:
Electrical cables can represent a hazard. Common problems include cables running from walls, across pathways, to desks and cables running across the foot wells under desks. It is important to have cables tidy and secure to reduce the probability of people tripping over them. This is normally undertaken by some form of cable management system. Such systems range from the cheap, do-it-yourself variety to the more expensive integrated desk solutions.

Where cables trailing across open areas cannot be avoided it is possible to buy flexible cable protectors. These are commonly available on rolls so allowing them to be quickly and easily cut to the desirable length. A number of cables can then be threaded into the slit in the bottom of the cover.

Although this type of cable management can be used under desks this is not advised as often they clash with the chair or footrest. Not only does this become annoying but is could lead to awkward postures, ie people not using footrests or sitting too far away from the desk.
