One of my recent orders for a TCI Type I passive unbalanced to balanced line converter, came with an interesting request.

I’m happy to make up custom cables for my customers but on this occasion, the customer asked for a pair of female XLR and a pair of male XLR cables, to bare wire connections. The target processors were an Urei 545 passive equaliser and a DBX 160X single channel compressor.

99% of the time, I’ll use Neutrik connectors and for this job, that would most definitely be the case. I used multi-core strands for the cables as they’re solid foil screened and low mass. Covered in a nylon sock with heat-shrink on both ends, they should last many, many years.

A few weeks ago, I had this Roland Alpha Juno 2 come in from Switzerland. Cosmetically, it was in beautiful condition but it had quite a few things wrong with it.

The backlight on the LCD was shot, the aftertouch wasn’t working and many keys either didn’t sound, were intermittent or triggered with full velocity. You know what I’m talking about.

The customer originally bought my AT-AJ-2 replacement aftertouch sensor for the Roland Alpha Juno 2 but subsequently decided to send me his newly acquired instrument as so many things needed attention.

I got a bit of shock on opening her up. There were obvious signs of fluid damage and the key-bed was absolutely filthy, covered in dust, animal hairs and other contaminants.

Most issues were pretty straight-forward to put right but boy, that key-bed needed cleaning, cleaning and then cleaning again.

The customer decided to take advantage of the situation and asked me to change the battery and the chorus chips suffice to say that a replacement OLED was dropped in as opposed to replacing the dead backlight on the original LCD and of course, the new aftertouch sensor changed the expressiveness of the instrument completely

This Roland Alpha Juno 2 is now not just in great cosmetic condition but works like new!

The last of my Mark II replacement aftertouch sensors is now complete. My AT-AJ-2 for the Roland Alpha Juno 2 joins the new (Mark II) versions of FSR based aftertouch sensors for the JX-10, D-50 and JX-8P.

With increased dynamic range and sensitivity, based on modern Force Sensitive Resistor technology, these things are also considerably more reliable than the original carbon track sensors.

A special THANKS to all my customers who backordered this and who have been amazingly patient while I’ve been developing it.

After almost four months, my last batch of PML-TX01 replacement transformers for the Marshall JMP-1 finally arrived.

These things were sent from Malta on 23rd June and most of that time (like more than 80%), they've been sitting in a ParcelForce depot in Milton Keynes, only about 40 miles away from me. It's been a complete and utter nightmare trying to get these delivered. Hell, I couldn't even collect them! Anyway, you can read the whole story here: https://plasmamusic.com/pml-tx01-updates-2025

But there's a couple of things I really do need to say...

THANK YOU to all those fantastic customers who pre-ordered this. THANK YOU for your patience and understanding.

I'll be packing most of these over the weekend, ready for shipping early next week. 😎

I have been waiting all summer for a batch of my PML-TX01 replacement transformers for the Marshall JMP-1 to arrive. The factory shipped them in early May (yes, May). Made in the same factory that made the original transformer for Marshall, these things come from Europe. Unfortunately, the domestic leg of the journey is handled by ParcelForce. As many will be aware, anything touched by ParcelForce WILL go wrong.

Two days ago I had a note dropped through my door requesting customs duty to be paid. This happened several weeks after ParcelForce emailed requesting my EORI number (which is on the package) and reassuring me that the package was in their procession. So, I duly paid the customs duty straight-away.

I was then informed that the package would be delivered two days later (today).

Well, at 9:00 this evening, I thought I'd check the tracking number. Oh boy! The package is being returned to the sender due to non-payment of customs duty. SERIOUSLY?!?!?!

Checked my PayPal account and indeed a payment matching the amount requested, was made to ParcelForce on Monday ( the day I received the request).

I'll be chasing this up tomorrow, assuming I can actually talk to someone.

To all my customers who pre-ordered my PML-TX01, I can only apologise. I have already told the factory that we need to discuss shipping as I can't deal with this kind of crap anymore and I definitely don't expect my customers to put up with this either.

I have a considerable amount of personal stuff to sort out like my eldest daughter's wedding, a post flood in our kitchen which after more than six months, the insurance company is only just completing and various home projects that always seem to get put on the shelf.

I'll be back on 1st September. See you all soon.

Welcome to Plasma Music Limited

My name’s Alex. I set up Plasma Music Limited in June 1999, which means that at the time of writing this, it’s twenty years old. Who would have thought?

My passion is music but the truth is, I like anything that combines technology and creative arts. With a background in electronics, I design and build custom electronics for audio recording studios and live performance as well as gadgets to enhance home automation systems and things like Google Home and Amazon Alexa. I also service and repair music technology like amps, synthesisers, etc. I design and build computer systems for professional creative people such as music engineers and producers, photographers, videographers and graphics designers.

I also design websites, produce graphics, offer photography services and even photography renovation.

So, if you need help or advise on any of that, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
