The ambition is a big one โ to create a genuine pathway for young Welsh anglers and, over time, develop teams capable of competing with the very best nations in the world. ๐๐
A couple of years ago, Ben had a really interesting conversation with the Croatian team manager about how a relatively small nation has managed to become such a force in international match fishing.
When Ben asked what their secret was, the answer was simple: ๐๐๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ ๐๐ต๐ฒ๐บ ๐๐ผ๐๐ป๐ด.
Croatia identify promising anglers from around 10 or 11 years old and then develop them over a number of years, specifically teaching the techniques they are likely to encounter at World Championships.

๐ฃ Plus the other international techniques that can sometimes be unfamiliar to youngsters brought up solely around UK-style match fishing.

The first step is finding out ๐๐ต๐ผ ๐ถ๐ ๐ผ๐๐ ๐๐ต๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฒ.
Who is eligible to represent Wales? Who would love the opportunity? And which youngsters have the enthusiasm and commitment to learn and develop?
We are therefore planning a ๐๐ฒ๐ฐ๐น๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป ๐ผ๐ณ ๐๐ป๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐๐ / ๐ง๐ฎ๐น๐ฒ๐ป๐ ๐๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ถ๐ณ๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป ๐๐ฎ๐ ๐ฎ๐ ๐๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ณ๐ผ๐ฟ๐ฑ ๐๐ฎ๐ธ๐ฒ๐ ๐ฑ๐๐ฟ๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ข๐ฐ๐๐ผ๐ฏ๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐ต๐ฎ๐น๐ณ-๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐บ, provisionally on the Wednesday. Arrangements with the venue are still being finalised, so the date and full details will be confirmed very shortly. ๐

This isnโt about selecting a team and immediately sending them to a World Championship.
The plan is to use ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ณ ๐ฎ๐ ๐ฎ ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐น๐ผ๐ฝ๐บ๐ฒ๐ป๐ ๐๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ฟ, working with a group of young anglers, coaching them in international techniques and giving them the experience and knowledge theyโll need to compete at the highest level.
And then we have a very clear targetโฆ

There is a lot of work ahead, but this is a hugely exciting opportunity to start building something for the long-term future of Welsh match fishing.

Young anglers need to meet at least one of the following criteria:
