Thousands of people live on Britain’s canals and rivers — but campaigners say many still face barriers to healthcare, services, legal security and recognition as residents.

A recent Waterways APPG meeting heard calls for stronger protections for residential boaters and for living afloat to be properly reflected in housing and planning policy.

One for the diary: the National Waterways Museum at Ellesmere Port is celebrating its 50th anniversary weekend on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 June — with entry at 1976 prices.

Adult tickets will cost just £1.95 for one weekend only, with talks, live music, traditional craft demonstrations, canal art, souvenirs and a new exhibition marking five decades of waterways heritage.

River Canal Rescue is set to feature in new episodes of Channel 4’s Narrow Escapes, with cameras following engineers during two dramatic recoveries — including the raising of nb Rosie on the Oxford Canal after it was ransacked and sunk, and a boat recovery at Kelston Lock following an explosion.
