🔧 Divers called in to get historic Bevere Lock moving again

Boaters can once again navigate the River Severn between Stourport and Gloucester after a fault at Bevere Lock was repaired.

The problem was below the waterline, meaning specialist divers had to step in to remove the faulty paddle before repairs could be completed safely on land.

Other parts of the 183-year-old lock were checked and improved at the same time.

💧 Almost one in four samples showed poor water quality – now more volunteers are needed

Nearly 200 samples were collected across the Aire and Yorkshire Derwent catchments during April’s Great UK WaterBlitz, revealing a mixed picture of river health across the county.

Now Yorkshire Wildlife Trust’s Rivers to Reef project is calling for more people to get involved in the next survey, taking place from September 18-21.

No previous experience is needed, with free testing kits and guidance provided – and every sample helps build a clearer picture of pollution and river health across Yorkshire.

🚤 Goole marks 200 years with spectacular bicentenary flotilla

A colourful flotilla of cruisers, Dutch barges, narrowboats, historic keels and commercial craft took to the water to celebrate Goole’s 200th anniversary.

The event retraced the historic 1826 arrival of 50 vessels that marked the opening of the port, with crowds lining the docks and riverside to watch the procession.

Many of the boats were decorated for the occasion, with horns sounding across the water as the fleet made its way through the docks.

🌿 A healthier River Wissey – and a boost for wildlife

Work is underway to give the River Wissey a helping hand, with Aquamaintain and Norfolk Rivers Trust carrying out a series of habitat improvements along the waterway.

From improving natural flows and oxygen levels to creating better habitats for fish, insects, birds and amphibians, the project is all about helping the river become healthier, more diverse and more resilient for the future.

It’s a great example of how working with nature can make a real difference to our waterways and the wildlife that depends on them.

𝗘𝗟𝗘𝗖𝗧𝗥𝗜𝗖 𝗣𝗔𝗧𝗥𝗢𝗟 𝗕𝗢𝗔𝗧 𝗟𝗔𝗨𝗡𝗖𝗛𝗘𝗦 𝗢𝗡 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗧𝗛𝗔𝗠𝗘𝗦 ⚡🛥️

The Environment Agency has launched the electric Blackwater Joule, a new RS Pulse 63 RIB which will be used for enforcement, patrols, monitoring and maintenance on the non-tidal Thames.

The boat forms part of the Zero Emission Workboat Network project and will help the agency trial cleaner technology as it works towards cutting fleet boat emissions by 50%.

A sister vessel, Electra, is also due to begin work in East Anglia.

Passengers at Sheffield Station can now see, hear and even smell the River Sheaf as it flows beneath Platform Five.

The new River Sheaf Lightwell brings daylight into a stretch of river that has been hidden since the mid-19th century, following six years of work by the Sheaf and Porter Rivers Trust and its partners.
