10 years, I lived and breathed project management. I managed tight deadlines, handled unexpected risks, resolved stakeholder conflicts, and kept complex projects on track. But when my baby girl arrived a year ago, I had to pause my corporate career. Stepping away from a job I loved wasn’t easy, but little did I know I was about to step into the most demanding management role of my life.
It turns out running a household with an energetic 7-year-old boy and a fiercely independent 1-year-old girl requires the same skill set as managing a multi-million-pound project!
Crisis Management: In IT, a server crash is a crisis. At home, a simultaneous toddler blowout and a 7-year-old's homework emergency at 7:59 AM is a critical system failure. Both require calm under pressure and immediate tactical intervention!
Resource Allocation & Budgeting: Balancing school runs, meal prep, nap schedules, and developmental activities is basically high-level resource planning.
Conflict Resolution: Negotiating between corporate stakeholders has nothing on mediating an intense dispute between a 7-year-old and a 1-year-old
Agile Frameworks: If parenting has taught me anything, it’s that you have to pivot daily. A sudden fever or a skipped nap means throwing out the sprint plan and adapting instantly.
I might have a "career gap" on paper, but my management skills have never been sharper. To all the mums out there managing the beautiful, chaotic, and exhausting daily "projects" of raising children—your corporate skills haven't faded. They've just been upgraded to the executive level.
