🇵🇭 FILIPINO FOOD CULTURE VS. 🇬🇧 BRITISH REACTIONS 😂🐟
So apparently, serving fried tilapia (or any fish) with the head still on is totally normal for us Pinoys… but it can freak out some Brits 😅
Ever wondered why many British people are grossed out when they see a fish with eyes staring back at them on the plate? Here’s the lowdown:
👀 “It’s too real!”
In Western culture, people are used to food looking “clean” and “processed.” They prefer fish that’s been filleted, de-boned, and definitely decapitated. Seeing the fish head — especially the eyes — is just too much for them.
🍽️ Plating over practicality.
British dining culture puts a big emphasis on presentation. A whole fried fish? That’s not exactly what you’d expect in a posh dinner setting. To a lot of them, it looks messy or even disturbing.
🧠 Psychological detachment.
A lot of Brits (and Westerners in general) prefer not to be reminded that their food was once alive. So if the fish head is still there? That’s a hard pass for many.
Meanwhile, us Filipinos?
We’ll be fighting over who gets the cheeks, eyes, or the crispy head! 😋 In dishes like sinigang, paksiw, or inihaw, the fish head isn’t just tolerated… IT IS THE BEST PART! 🤤
Point of the story?
Food is cultural. What’s gross to one person might be a delicacy to another.
And yes, if you’re feeding a British friend, maybe give them the fillet first. 😂
Would you eat the fish head? Or do you give it away?
