This is important.
We are allowing a genocide.
When I was a child studying WWII and the genocide of the Jewish people, I often thought, "How did they allow this? This certainly can't happen now; we are more evolved."
I never imagined I’d live through one, perpetrated paradoxically by a sadistic government that is supposed to represent those who suffered the first. With pride, they terrorise and kill civilians of all ages, while our governments support them with weapons and try to save face by scolding them gently through embarrassing declarations. Imagine how sick this scene is: a crazed Israeli man is beating a Palestinian child to death in the street; a Western businessman stands beside him, hands him a baseball bat to finish the job, and then says afterwards: “Well, that was inappropriate.”
This is what’s happening now.
Right now, countless children are being killed in ruthless ways, starved, and treated worse than stray dogs. How can we allow this to happen and then go to sleep, to work, even to church, as if our lives are unchanged? Did we become so horribly selfish? Superficial?
I have an exercise for you to do right now. Please just stop whatever you are doing; this is more important.
Think of the person you care about the most in the world. Their face, their clothes. See them in front of you. Now imagine them in Gaza, alone. Terror in their eyes as they hide in a broken tent. Imagine them listening to the screams of women and children being hit, r***d, and killed. Their terror when the desperate, pleading cries abruptly stop. They suddenly realise, the killers are coming for them.
How do you feel?
If you felt something, that is a crumb of empathy, because you just saw, however briefly, a fraction of a moment in the shoes of a person (yes, a real person) in Gaza right now.
The Italian government is not only doing absolutely nothing but is also supporting Israel by not cutting ties with this sick government and by allowing the provision of weaponry. The British government is jailing peaceful protesters, while many of its corporations profit from the killing of thousands of children.
Now tell me we are evolved democracies.
As in every dark story, there a little light: these governments do not represent the majority of the people, but the rich corporations backing them. The problem is that too many of our consciences are still asleep.
The , a group of heoic civilians, is now risking their lives to bring the protest there, along with food and medical aid. The duty of every cultured person and sensible organisation in the world is to support them and organisations like them.
