You have zero control over when and how your story will run when you reach out to media.
I am thrilled to see my client La Simms in today’s Mirror, but it has taken 5 months to get here.
Yes, 5 whole months. And that’s not because it took ages to get a bite – I got a ‘yes’ with my first pitch.
It was for a UK broadsheet and although it was May, they asked if we could wait until October as it’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month. I felt it was worth the wait because the broadsheet in question has a massive reach.
But, in September, they got in touch to say they’d changed their mind. There was no real explanation, but this happens, a lot. News agendas change, other stories pop up, you really are in the lap of the gods with PR.
Then, I reached out to a contact at the Mirror. They were keen and wanted to do the interview immediately, so they could run it the next day.
It was all done in a mad rush and then…nothing.
This morning, I got a message to say that it was in today’s paper and will go online at the weekend. The relief was immense!
Getting media coverage isn’t like buying an advert where you pay your money and tell them when you want it to run. It’s a gamble. I try and explain this to people, but often they don’t hear it as they’re swept up in the excitement of being in the spotlight.
Fortunately, La was patient. She invested in me and trusted me, even though we hadn’t met. In fact, we hadn’t spoken either – I saw her Instagram account and knew she had a great story. I also loved what she was doing with her podcast, and I wanted to see her name in lights.
When the weeks rolled by, her trust in me didn’t waver and that’s so important. I always do my best for clients, but at the end of the day, I am at the mercy of editors too. I always get there in the end and the moment is all the sweeter because of the wait.
Congratulations La. Keep on shining!
