Wirral Council has begun the legal process for repealing little-known local byelaws dating back some 90 years that effectively prohibited cycling, scooting or horse riding along the coastal path from Meols to Wallasey.

Byelaws introduced in 1935 restricted a number of behaviours along the then North Wirral Coast Sea Defence Road on the grounds of public nuisance.

Tributes have been paid to the driving force behind the Friends of Hoylake and Meols in Bloom, who has passed away.

Jan Foster was the chair of the voluntary group planting and maintaining flower beds at many locations including Market Street, Parade Gardens, Queens Park and Hoylake and Meols railway stations.

Wirral Council wants to bring in an external operator to run the Wirral Water Sports Centre in West Kirby.

The complex is currently run by the council and offers a range of water sports on the Marine Lake, but the cash-strapped local authority is looking at ways to eliminate the cost of subsidising the site.

The main road through Meols is to be dug up for two months to replace a century-old gas pipe.
