In the US, a whopping 70% of music consumed is NOT new.

While new releases are great at boosting your streaming stats, finding new audiences & keeping your existing fans engaged, it’s likely that a good chunk of your royalties are actually coming from your existing catalogue, not new releases.

So, what can you do to make sure your back catalogue is earning as much as possible?

📚 Make sure your metadata is accurate

➡️ Metadata is what every DSP uses to keep their libraries organised, meaning that if your metadata is wrong you might not be showing up in the right places (like playlists, genres, etc). Metadata best practices change over time, so it’s worth double-checking your older releases are correct!

📚 Encourage remixes

➡️ New versions of existing tracks will a) get more listeners returning to your original versions, & b) expose your music to a whole new audience via the remixer. To get even more benefit from remixes, use the Remixer role in your release’s metadata, so that the track appears on both your streaming profiles.

📚 Use DSP campaigns

➡️ Update your releases with Spotify Canvas (looping visuals that play alongside the track) or Apple Motion artwork or add your tracks into Discovery Mode (if eligible). For an even greater boost, you could run a Spotify Showcase campaign for a track that’s nearing an anniversary or has some other current relevance (e.g. trending on socials, used in a sync campaign, etc).

📚 Harness social media

➡️ Consider running social ads for previous releases to reach new audiences or partnering with creators to showcase your catalogue. Social media algorithms show different content to different people, so back catalogue campaigns have a chance to engage audiences that your new releases might not reach.

Whatever your plans are this Holiday Season, bear in mind that we’ll be running with a smaller team than usual while we all enjoy a much-deserved rest!

🚫 We’re CLOSED between 25th and 29th December and on 1st January
🩵 We’re only open during the MORNING on 24th and 31st December
🩵 We’re only open during the AFTERNOON on 2nd January
✅ We’re OPEN as usual on 29th and 30th December, and back to normal from 5th January
