It’s been one of those years of major family activity, so we thought we’d celebrate our son’s birthday and let him experience a trip abroad. Here’s a few snaps and vids. Music tutors: your next useful offer might already be hiding in your teaching week.

Not in a complicated business plan.

Not in a massive online course.

Not in some completely new thing you have to invent from scratch.

It might be hiding in the questions you answer all the time.

“How can my child practise better?”
“Where do I start with GarageBand?”
“Can you help with GCSE composition?”
“How do I build confidence as a beginner?”

Repeated questions are clues.

They show you where people are stuck, what they value, and what they may need help with beyond a single lesson slot.

The next step is to keep it small.

A useful first offer could be:

* a practical guide
* a 60-minute workshop
* a short mini-course
* a downloadable resource
* a focused support session

It does not need to be perfect.

It just needs to solve one clear problem for one clear group of people.

And the strongest offers usually focus on the outcome.

Not just “I teach piano.”

More like:

“I help adult beginners play their first song with confidence.”

Not just “I teach music tech.”

More like:

“I help music teachers get started with GarageBand without feeling overwhelmed.”

Not just “I help with composition.”

More like:

“I help GCSE music students finish a composition they feel proud of.”

That shift matters.

People are not just looking for information.

They are looking for progress, clarity and confidence.

That’s what I’m exploring through Beyond the Hourly Lesson — helping music tutors think about how their existing expertise could become something useful beyond one-to-one teaching.

Music tutors: if you’ve ever thought, “I could probably create something useful from what I already teach,” this is a good place to start.

You do not need ten ideas.

You do not need to build a huge online course.

You do not need to have everything worked out before you begin.

A better first step is much simpler:

Choose one repeated question.
Choose one group of people you want to help.
Choose one small format to test.

That might be a guide, a short workshop, a mini-course, a resource pack, a support session, or something else entirely.

The key is to keep it clear:

I help [who] achieve [result] through [format].

For example:

- I help adult beginners learn their first song through a short online course.
- I help parents support better practice at home through a simple guide.
- I help GCSE students finish a composition through a focused workshop.

This is exactly what I’m exploring through Beyond the Hourly Lesson.

The aim is to help music tutors and creative educators turn the knowledge they already use every week into something practical, useful and valuable beyond the one-to-one lesson slot.

A helpful shift for any tutor creating something new is this:

People do not just buy information. They buy progress.

They want movement.
They want confidence.
They want clarity.
They want help getting from where they are now to where they want to be.

So instead of starting with:

“I teach piano.”
“I do music tech.”
“I help with composition.”

It can be more powerful to think in terms of outcome:

* learn your first song
* build practice confidence
* finish a composition
* get started with GarageBand
* feel more confident in lessons

That simple shift can make an offer clearer, more useful and easier for people to say yes to.

One thing I’m becoming more convinced of is this:

Your first offer does not need to be huge.

It does not need to be a giant course, polished academy or full membership from day one.

Sometimes the best place to start is something small and useful, such as:

* a practical guide
* a 60-minute workshop
* a short mini-course
* a downloadable resource
* a simple support session

The aim is not to build everything at once.

The aim is to create one useful thing that solves one clear problem.

That feels much more achievable for busy music tutors and creative educators.

I’m currently exploring this through Beyond the Hourly Lesson, and I’d love to hear from tutors who are interested in building income and impact beyond the lesson slot.
