Train for resilience.

When the going gets tough the strong will prevail.

Teaching your dog to be resilient is a very important step in their training. Showing the dog that it can work through a little bit of hardship and come out the other side on top. Not only builds confidence in your dog but also strength the bond between you and them. Good breeders start this process in puppyhood with a thing call early neurological stimulation. This is where the pups are introduced to very small challenges from a few days old.

This builds resilience for the pups to face something that is slightly uncomfortable and be able to work through it. This has to be continued as the dog grows up in life and also in training. A dog that is not strong in itself or doesn’t have the trust in their human. Can become reactive or fear aggressive because it hasn’t learned to cope with situations or doesn’t trust the handler to deal with the problem.

Resilience in live is being able to cope with the builders coming into the house. Or being able to sleep in a new location in the house or away on holiday. We have had clients go away and because the dog was so used to a routine it wouldn’t eat and it didn’t sleep for 2 days. Because the routine had been broken simple things like change feed times and move where the dog sleep now and again isn’t something that is hard to do but it will help both you and your dog.

In training you can see the dog stop working to the whistle or verbal commands. Because it has lost faith in the handler to be able to help them. I could also be that the dog doesn’t want to return to the handler without the dummy or retrieve.
