Hamps Valley Ltd had an emergency call out in Leek today at 3.20pm. A Poplar tree had split out and part of it had fallen onto the Cheadle road by Birchall playing fields. On closer inspection of the tree by our senior tree risk consultant, using Quantified Tree Risk Assessment (QTRA) the tree was deemed to have an elevated risk of harm and with a high frequency of cars passing by, even queuing within the danger zone the decision was made by the police to close the road.
A crane was required to dismantle the remaining part of tree that was still standing. This meant a delay while waiting for the crane to arrive on site.
We would like to thank our staff for carrying out a speedy, efficient and safe job whilst under pressure. We also apologise to the road users that had to turn around or experienced long delays but the situation was not of our making and we thank you for your patience.

"I remember thinking: 'Although I don't think this is serious, they seem to and so will I survive this?'" 😮

Robinia pseudoacacia, commonly known as black locust or false acacia, is a hardy deciduous tree native to North America but widely planted in the UK.

This one here is an old tree that was once reduced to 4m above ground level which has left it with a very interesting growth pattern.

Known for its foliage, fragrant white flowers in spring and deeply furrowed bark, this fast growing species thrives in a range of conditions.

Its durable wood is highly prized for outdoor projects, while its nitrogen-fixing roots enrich the soil, supporting biodiversity.

Though valued for its beauty and resilience, it can be invasive in some areas, so careful management is key. A fascinating and beautiful tree with a complex reputation.
