🌳 From Containers to Green Space! Major new £3.5m plans revealed for Cank Street! 🏙️👇

A fresh vision has been unveiled for the site connecting Green Dragon Square to Cank Street and St Martin’s Square!

While previous concepts pointed toward a Boxpark-style shipping container market, Leicester City Council and Maber Architects have officially pivoted to a £3.5 million green walkway and pocket park:

🏗️ Demolition Planned: Empty council-owned units at 12–20 Cank Street will be cleared to create an open pedestrian corridor.
🌿 More Urban Greenery: The new layout features soft landscaping, trees, and a children’s adventure play area made from natural materials.
🌮 Street Food Hub: Paved areas are built into the design to host rotating street food vendors.
🚶 Connecting the Lanes: Fills the “missing link” for pedestrians walking from Town Hall Square through to St Martin’s Square and the Old Town.

Work is pencilled in to begin around November 2026, with a 12-month build schedule.

💬 Do you prefer this green park and walkway concept over the previous container boxpark idea? Drop your thoughts below!

Leicester is so boring 🥱 It’s not like there’s an independent market held in an underground car park, showcasing some of the best independent businesses in the UK and attracting a whole bunch of creative people. Wrong! There sure is.

St Mary’s Works Leicester is the new place you’ll want to visit to experience something like this in the city. Located near the King Power stadium their independent markets bring some of the best food, fashion and creatives together. Relaxed, fun and is more of what Leicester needs.

Future markets take place on:
24th October 🌮🧥 Mash Up Market
5th December 🎄🎁 Xmas Market

Trust us, its worth a visit.
