Unforgettable weekend at the 16th Somali Week Festival at Oxford House. Saturday was a powerhouse event celebrating our incredible Community Champions. I had the honour of speaking alongside some true trailblazers: Hawa Kodah, a deaf awareness advocate, shed light on the challenges faced by the deaf community and her inspiring work in Somaliland. Mushtaaq Abdi, a health advocate, shared her impactful contributions to the healthcare sector in Somaliland. Zamzam Ibrahim, a climate activist and Head of Strategy at Somalis for Sustainability, passionately discussed her fight for social justice, sustainability, and education. The panel, brilliantly chaired by Dr. Abdi Rahman, left the room buzzing with emotion and inspiration. I delivered a heartfelt message on behalf of parents raising children with Autism, which struck a deep chord with the audience. Sunday was all about celebrating literature. I proudly presented my better half’s book, "Life Line – A Mother's Story of Hope," in both Somali and English versions. It was an emotional moment sharing such a powerful story of resilience and hope with the community. Pictures speak louder than words; check below. The 16th Somali Week Festival – Celebrating Our Unsung Heroes! Kayd Somali Media & Arts is thrilled to invite you to the launch of the 16th Somali Week Festival, hosted by Kayd Media, kicking off on Friday, October 18th at 6:00 PM at the British Library. The excitement continues on Saturday, October 19th at 2:00 PM at Oxford House, Bethnal Green, where a remarkable panel of Somali community Champions will share their inspiring stories and advocacy work.
Panelists are:
1. Hawa Kodah – Deaf awareness advocate, speaking on the challenges faced by the deaf community and her work in Somaliland.
2. Mushtaaq Abdi – Health advocate, sharing her charitable contributions to the health sector in Somaliland.

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of welcoming Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Mr Rupert Matthews to the St. Matthews estate for a walkabout session, designed to give high-ranking officials a first-hand look at the daily lives of the communities they serve. The unscripted, one-hour experience allowed the PCC to engage directly with local residents. He met with the "Shaah & Sheeko" (Tea and Talk) women’s group, part of Socopa activities in the community, to discuss the role of the PCC. He joined in a rug-making activity using recycled garments. The PCC shared a personal story about his mother doing similar work and promised to bring photos of her tools. Afterwards, he met representatives from the Somali Taxi Group, concluding the session a meeting with a local community leader. The previous session featured a walkabout with ICB CEO Caroline Trevithick who, along with PCC Mr Matthews can provide you a feedback on their experiences.
