While the launch of Skills England today marks an admirable step in addressing the national skills gap, there is an underlying issue that the government seems to overlook: the unique challenges faced by many UK businesses with a turnover of around £5 million. These businesses are crucial to the economy, yet they struggle to balance the complexities of finding and retaining skilled workers, particularly in tech and digital roles, with the rising expectations for flexible working conditions, career development opportunities, and inclusive workplaces.

For these smaller enterprises, managing these tasks can be a significant stretch. Limited human resources and financial constraints make it challenging to combat the mismatch between available skills and market needs. Unlike larger corporations, these businesses do not always have the financial clout to invest heavily in the solutions needed to attract and retain top talent.

However, it is precisely this cluster of businesses that will initially fuel the economy. The government is banking on them to generate increased revenue and drive economic growth. Yet, the bridge between these small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and the larger corporations, which the government encouraged today to support Skills England, is a long one. Researchers found that sleep patterns and chronotype (when we feel most alert) significantly affect our intelligence, reasoning, reaction time, and memory.
