"I grew up in Brasília beautiful capital city, surrounded by love, unity, and the warmth of a close-knit family. I miss my family deeply but they always come to visit, like my sister next week. It's a wonderful place to live, safe and full of life."

For many expats like Ana Celina, the founder of London Soft Skills, missing family is a quiet thread that runs beneath the surface of daily life abroad. It's the unspoken cost of seeking opportunities and purpose in a new country: the birthdays celebrated over video calls, the long stretches between warm embraces, the ache of absence softened by memories and fleeting reunions.

And yet, this distance teaches resilience, gratitude, and the power of nurturing emotional closeness across continents. In Ana’s story, she reminds us that love doesn't lose strength with miles, it simply grows more intentional.

Her journey echoes the shared heart of millions who live between homes: holding on to where they come from while bravely building where they are.

“Living on my own was a life changer, especially when pursuing a passion. I started working in the logistics industry at an international freight forwarder, combining two of my great loves: sales and international trade. It was at this point I also met my husband, Fernando. Moving into my own place in Paddington gave me the independence I had dreamed of. For three and a half years, I thrived in a role at one of the world’s largest shipping lines, building a career that felt deeply aligned with my studies and passions.

Getting married wasn’t just a romantic gesture for me, it was about faith, values, and new beginnings. Having lived with an ex-partner before, I knew I wanted something different, something solid. As a devout Catholic, marriage held deep meaning, a foundation for life and love.”

Liliana's story reminds us that building a life abroad is about more than work, it’s about claiming identity, honouring values, and embracing growth on every level.

“I got pregnant when I was 15, married when I was 16, and I was divorced by the age of 18 fleeing from domestic violence. Between all of that, I had a child, my son Ashley.”

But this is only part of her story.

For over 30 years, she’s quietly been the primary caregiver, nurse, advocate, and steady source of strength for her son’s complex mental health needs. Despite putting her own life on hold countless times, her love and commitment have been the cornerstone of his survival and hope

On Britalians TV with Marco Biagioli and Erica Melargo, she opens up and reflects on her journey, one of immense strength, sacrifice, and the power of resilience in the face of overwhelming odds.

You never know who’s reading, watching, or listening. But if one person is moved to keep going, that’s everything.

Life doesn’t promise ease, it promises growth. And in the middle of challenges, our mindset becomes our compass. Positivity is a choice that can make all the difference. Every person we impact through our words, actions, or motivations can change their life for the better.

Let’s choose motivation over defeat, perspective over despair, and connection over isolation. Every day you keep going is a day you’re building something stronger, for yourself and someone else, too.

"When I was a student, it was just working, working, working, doing casual jobs to get by. I didn’t even have time to absorb the culture. But when I landed my first job in logistics, something shifted. I started earning a salary, moved into the city, and that’s when I began to really enjoy my life in Australia. I started discovering another version of myself. It was no longer just about survival, it became about doing what I loved, building a career, exploring the city, and falling in love. Before that, I was lonely. When all you do is work, you don’t leave space for relationships or connection. But that changed. And that’s also when I met Fernando.”

For so many migrants, the journey begins with survival. But with time, it can become about thriving, found their own life. One where joy, relationships, and growth became just as important as work.

“I was 22 when I moved to Australia in 2009. I came here for a Master’s in International Commerce through a program with my university back home. I studied, then decided to stay a bit longer, and that’s when I met my husband at a barbecue. He’s also Colombian. We met through mutual friends, and now we’ve been married for 11 years.”

From that chance meeting at a barbecue, Liliana Rubiano’s journey of love, entrepreneurship, and cultural connection began to unfold.

Just months after arriving in Australia, while juggling studies and work, Liliana made a decision that would change her life. Inspired by her Colombian roots and the relaxed Australian coastal lifestyle, she planted the first seeds of what would become Tolu Australia a vibrant beachwear brand rooted in family, craftsmanship, and sustainability.

In 2017, Liliana left her career in international logistics to fully commit to her business and passion.

Liliana’s path hasn’t been without challenges, balancing motherhood, navigating business through a pandemic, and growing a brand from the ground up. But her story is one of resilience and quiet innovation, celebrating the strength in community, family, and staying true to your roots.

Sometimes walking away from the wrong path is the most powerful way to find your own.

In high school, Ana Celina, thought dentistry was her future, until a volunteer project supporting dentistry students showed her otherwise and she realized, "this isn’t for me".

That moment sparked a lifelong commitment to craft her own path. Today, as the founder of London Soft Skills, Ana empowers others to do the same: lead with authenticity, connect with courage, and build lives that reflect their strengths, not expectations.

That volunteer project didn’t close a door, it opened one. Today, Ana is the founder of London Soft Skills, where she helps people grow not through drills and diagnoses, but through connection, communication, and self-awareness.

"After university, I began my career in learning and development at Eletrobras, Brazil’s largest energy company. As a business educator, I designed training programmes for employees and trainees focused on leadership, technical, and behavioural skills, which later became known as soft skills. Recognising the value of soft skills, I became certified in gamification to make complex topics more engaging and accessible. By applying this methodology, we can empower individuals with essential life skills, transforming both organisations and communities."
