MARLINE’S TREE HAS BEEN SAVED 🌳 We’re delighted to share has approved a Tree Preservation Order (TPO) for Marline’s grapefruit tree on Queenstown Road.

Earlier this week, we shared the story of Marline, who came to London as part of the Windrush generation from Grenada around 45 years ago. With her, she brought a grapefruit sapling which she planted in her front garden on Queenstown Road, that has since bloomed into a beautiful 30-foot tree.

The tree is thought to be one of the only grapefruit trees in London, the other in Kew Gardens.

Following Marline’s passing last month, her friend and neighbour Lior , who we met with last week, made it her mission to put a TPO in place to protect the tree from ever being cut down.

Wandsworth Council was quick to carry out a Tree Evaluation Method for Preservation Order (TEMPO) this week and have confirmed the tree is approved for a TPO. TPOs aim to protect trees which make a significant impact on their local surroundings. It is an offence to cut down, top, lop, uproot, wilfully damage or wilfully destroy these trees without permission.

Congratulations to Lior for protecting Marline’s tree in what has been such a beautiful story of community. Marline will forever be remembered 🌳🕊️

SMALL BUSINESS POP-UP 🌟 Meet locals Aime and Sophia, who have recently launched their new business , showcasing original gifts and homewares from real creatives.

They’ve just secured their very own space on Northcote Road for a pop-up store this winter and are on the hunt for talented artists, makers & independent brands to stock on their shelves.

Their goal is to support independent artists and makers to help them get discovered by shoppers who value originality, and for shoppers to discover gifts that are truly worth giving (or keeping)!

Know an amazing small local businesses who this would be perfect for? Send them this post and direct them to the link in bio - the only criteria is they must be UK based and they must design or create the products themselves.

The pop-up is expected to open from late October for 8 weeks - so in perfect time for all those Christmas gifts. We can’t wait to check it out, stay tuned!

LOCAL HISTORY 🌳 What’s thought to be one of London’s only grapefruit trees can be found on Queenstown Road, and local resident and chef is looking to protect it.

The story starts with Marline, photographed in the first picture by Lior. Marline came to Battersea from the Caribbean around 45 years ago as part of the Windrush generation to help rebuild Britain following WWII.

She brought with her a small memory of home, a tiny grapefruit sapling which she planted in her front garden. The tree has since blossomed to an incredible 30-foot tree.

Marline sadly passed away in June, but leaves behind a legacy, her pride and joy, a beautiful tree that continues to thrive and bear fruit every year. She asked for her ashes to be scattered under the tree and a plaque has been put in place, honouring Marline.

Marline’s friend and neighbour, Lior, is seeking to obtain a preservation order for the tree, in the fear that the tree could get chopped down but future developers. Together with , she’s making progress - a TPO has been applied for and she’s waiting for a response.

You can catch Lior tomorrow on when she’ll be sharing Marline’s story.

What a beautiful story of community and discovery that shows what just sparking a conversation with your neighbour can lead to. We’ll keep you posted 💙 RIP Marline.
