"A thousand apologies" - a classic catchphrase 😂
Mind Your Language boasts an impressive rating of 8.7 on IMDB! This beloved British sitcom, hailed as one of the best comedies of its era, is set in an adult education college in London. The show revolves around Mr Jeremy Brown, an English teacher assigned to teach a diverse group of foreign students.
Each student comes from a different cultural background, leading to a hilarious blend of misunderstandings and comedic moments as they struggle to learn English. The characters include Mr Jeremy Brown (played by Barry Evans), the well-meaning but often exasperated English teacher; Giovanni Capello (played by George Camiller), a charming Italian chef; Ali Nadim (played by Dino Shafeek), a jovial Pakistani who frequently misinterprets English phrases; Ranjeet Singh (played by Albert Moses), a Sikh with a penchant for misunderstandings; and Anna Schmidt (played by Jacki Harding).
Despite its popularity, the show faced controversy for its use of ethnic stereotypes and has been criticised for perpetuating cultural clichés. Nonetheless, it remains a nostalgic favourite for many, remembered fondly for its humour and heartwarming moments.
You wouldn’t get away with a comedy like this anymore but thankfully we will always have access to this classic.

Michael Bates was a familiar face across British film and television in the '60s and '70s, often cast as the no-nonsense authority figure with a sharp tongue and impeccable timing.
Born in India in 1920, he served as a Major with the Gurkhas during WWII before turning to acting. He was a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company and had a strong stage presence, but it was on screen where he really stood out.
TV fans will remember him as Cyril Blamire, the pompous ex-army man in the early years of Last of the Summer Wine, and as Rangi Ram in It Ain’t Half Hot Mum—a role that’s controversial now but was hugely popular at the time.
On the big screen, he played Field Marshal Montgomery in Patton, Chief Guard Barnes in Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange, and appeared in Hitchcock’s Frenzy.
He died in 1978, aged just 57, but left behind a body of work that is still popular today.

"Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads?" perfectly captures the bittersweet essence of the early '70s. This classic British sitcom balances humour with a deep sense of melancholy and nostalgia. Through the lives of Bob and Terry, it explores themes of friendship, change, and the longing for the past. The show delves into how people adapt—or struggle to adapt—to life's changes, especially in a world that feels like it's moving on without them.
The iconic theme song, co-written by Ian La Frenais and Mike Hugg, mirrors this mood, blending a rousing, almost anthemic sound with lyrics that hint at the characters’ nostalgia and regrets. It’s a perfect encapsulation of the show’s tone, capturing the themes of camaraderie, wistfulness, and the inescapable passage of time. Although rarely re-broadcast, "Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads?" remains a powerful piece of British television, remembered for its unique mix of humour and emotional depth.
