THE THRILL OF THE CHASE
Following Ivy Ngeow's lively, engaging book event at the bookshop a few days ago, we are very pleased to have all of her novels on our shelves. They are among the very best psychological thrillers out there.
➨ Overboard (Leopard Print London). Greg has no idea who he is. All he knows is that he has to be one lucky man. He's survived a shipwreck. Washed ashore on the coast of Thailand after an epic storm, he's stunned to discover he has a Chinese wife who arrives and takes him back to family life in London. She's pregnant. When a blow to his head brings a rush of his memories back, he knows why. And who his assailant is. But he is mute, disfigured and disabled. Above all, he is penniless. How will he escape when he's living the life of the man they think he is?
➨ White Crane Strikes (Leopard Print London). Chicago, 1971. Jay Jay’s girlfriend wants a big knock-’em-dead wedding and a new apartment with the whole ball of wax. Grateful when her art world schmoozing lands him a fixer-upper gig for an arts patron, he has no idea about the sleeping dragon he’s about to wake. His boss gets him a Chinatown side hustle, and Jay Jay looks the other way when he overhears an organized crime conversation for fear of losing the much-needed extra income and takeout treats. But when the Chinese restaurant manager vanishes, Jay Jay is trapped in threatening tong talk and the chow is now no fun. His family is deep in hot soup.
➨ Heart of Glass (Leopard Print London). Chicago, 1980. Cold, poor and starving, immigrant Li-an is a bad con artist and a brilliant musician. When she wows a mysterious Italian businessman in the Drake Hotel with her piano-pounding, she’s snapped up to play in the sin city of Macau. In a heartbeat, she’s there. With new killer clothes, her own pavilion in a private estate and a dinner show, she finds easy livin’ not that easy. Trafficking and tongs sure ain’t music to her ears. She’s only just left her life of crime by coming to this beat. When her employer collapses in the pool at a party, Li-an knows it’s no accident.
➨ The American Boyfriend (Penguin SEA). Phoebe Wong would do anything to escape a British winter. But it may cost her more than her airfare. Sunsets, tacos and margaritas all sound perfect to exhausted forty-three-year-old single mum Phoebe with a dead-end job in Southwark. When her long distance boyfriend in New York invites her to meet him in Florida, she couldn’t wait to jump on a plane with her toddler. Arriving with her teething child at her boyfriend’s Key West ‘vacay home’ before him, she is robbed on her first night. With no money, cards or passports, she is grateful for the support of friendly locals. At a BBQ, she meets an old expat British businessman. Her boyfriend arrives eventually, apologetic, and takes her out to a posh seafood dinner. But when the British expat is shot that night in the same restaurant’s car park, Phoebe is trapped in a put-up job, and her boyfriend’s delayed arrival is suspiciously timed. If this place has turned darker and chillier than London, she wants out. Will she be able to pull herself and her daughter away from danger?
