Lennox Lewis and Jeremy Williams never fought professionally, but they had a famous sparring incident in the mid-1990s. Williams, then a rising prospect, went hard at Lewis during training. Lewis responded with a powerful right hand that knocked Williams out cold, ending the session instantly.

The story spread through boxing circles, reinforcing Lewis’s reputation as a dangerous puncher even in sparring. Williams later admitted Lewis “caught him good,” though he downplayed any rivalry.

James Toney’s performance against Evander Holyfield (October 4, 2003, at Mandalay Bay) is generally rated as masterclass, given the context and the quality of his boxing.

Here are three reasons why:

Technical Mastery
Toney showcased his classic defensive skillset: shoulder roll, subtle head movement, and counterpunching.

He neutralized Holyfield’s offense by slipping and rolling shots, making a historically aggressive fighter look hesitant.

Adaptation to Heavyweight
This was Toney’s first major heavyweight fight, moving up from cruiserweight. Despite being smaller, he used timing, accuracy, and inside fighting to offset Holyfield’s size advantage.

His body punching was particularly effective, gradually wearing Holyfield down.

Psychological Edge
Toney frustrated Holyfield by standing in front of him, proving nearly unhittable at times, and countering with sharp, clean punches.

He imposed his style without ever looking rushed, giving the impression he was in complete control.

Meldrick Taylor’s career is the story of dazzling speed, Olympic glory, and one of the most debated finishes in boxing history.

A Philadelphia native, Taylor burst onto the scene at just 17 when he won Olympic gold at the 1984 Los Angeles Games, showcasing the fast hands and slick footwork that would define his style.

Turning professional the same year, he quickly built a reputation as one of boxing’s most electrifying talents, winning the IBF junior welterweight title in 1988.

His most decisive, and infamous, fight came on March 17, 1990, against Julio César Chávez. Billed as “Thunder Meets Lightning,” it pitted Taylor’s speed and volume punching against Chávez’s relentless pressure.

For nearly 12 rounds, Taylor appeared to be pulling off a career-defining upset, outlanding the Mexican legend with dazzling combinations.

But Chávez’s steady punishment took its toll, and with just two seconds left, referee Richard Steele stopped the bout after Taylor was dropped, a decision still fiercely debated today.

Though he later captured a welterweight title, Taylor never fully recovered from the Chávez fight, physically or psychologically. His career remains a reminder of how brilliance and heartbreak can collide in a single night under the lights.
