X-ray telescope finds something unexpected with the 'heartbeat black hole'
Unexpected X-ray polarization challenges long-held ideas about how black holes behave.
A black hole’s bizarre "heartbeat" is forcing astronomers to reconsider how these cosmic heavyweights behave.
Observations of IGR J17091-3624 — a black hole in a binary system roughly 28,000 light-years from Earth — were taken using NASA's Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE). Nicknamed the "heartbeat" black hole for its dramatic, rhythmic pulses in brightness, the object feeds on matter stolen from a companion star. The black hole's pulses are the result of fluctuations in the superheated plasma swirling around it (also known as the accretion disk) and the inner region called the corona, which can reach extreme temperatures and radiate incredibly luminous X-rays.
IXPE measured the polarization — the direction of the black hole’s X-rays — to determine the alignment of its vibrations. The space probe recorded a surprising 9.1% polarization degree, which is much higher than theoretical models predicted, according to a statement from NASA.

Grab your telescope and aim it at Saturn in the early morning hours of Aug. 19 to see Titan's colossal shadow sweep across the majestic gas giant's cloud tops.
This rare shadow transit is visible during a few brief windows every 15 years, when Saturn's rings are aligned edge-on with Earth. During this time, the orbital plane of Saturn's largest moon, Titan, is well aligned to cast its mighty shadow over the gas giant's cloud tops.
Each Titan shadow transit is separated by a period of 16 days, equal to the amount of time that it takes for the moon to complete a full lap of its parent planet. The next transit begins at 1:52 a.m. ET (0552 GMT) on Aug. 19. From there, the moon's shadow takes a little over four hours to sweep across Saturn's disk, according Sky & Telescope.

Is our Universe trapped inside a black hole?

Some scientists propose that our universe might exist inside a black hole. This idea, known as black hole cosmology or Schwarzschild cosmology, suggests that the observable universe is the interior of a black hole within a larger parent universe.

Recent observations from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) have added intrigue to this theory. Specifically, JWST data revealed that about two-thirds of observed galaxies rotate in a clockwise direction, challenging the expectation of a random distribution of galaxy rotations.

This asymmetry could imply that the universe inherited a preferred rotation axis from a parent black hole, supporting the notion that our universe was born inside a rotating black hole.

Physicist Nikodem Popławski has been a proponent of this theory, suggesting that black holes could serve as bridges to new universes. While this concept remains speculative, it offers a fascinating perspective on the origins and structure of our cosmos.
