A PSNI Bronze Commander has been filmed appearing to push an elderly female pensioner during protests outside the Chimney Corner Hotel in Newtownabbey. The footage has sparked immediate outrage online, with many condemning the officer's conduct as heavy-handed and unacceptable.
The incident occurred as a small group of protesters gathered outside the hotel, with the main group held back further down the road by police. Tensions were already running high across Northern Ireland amid ongoing unrest following the knife attack on Stephen Ogilvie in North Belfast.
The behaviour of the senior officer has raised serious questions about policing standards during the current period of disorder across the country.

She said no. That was all she did. She swerved a kiss she didn't want. And Taylor Smyth got behind the wheel of his car and drove over her — twice.

Taylor Smyth, 26, had sent his ex-partner an unsolicited Snapchat message after the pair had split in 2022 following a four-year relationship — asking if they could be friends. They met at the Red Lion pub in Irlams o' th' Height, were thrown out for spilling a drink, and walked back to Smyth's home on Summerville Road to continue drinking. At around 3:30am, Smyth tried to kiss her. She rejected him. The mood changed instantly.

Smyth swiftly left. She ran after him. He got into his Vauxhall Corsa. Moments after she fell behind the car — he reversed over her. Then drove forward over her again.

He stopped. He got out. He told her "stay with me" — then dragged her injured body into the car and drove back to Summerville Road. He called his mother and said: "I have run her over mum. I'm going to go to prison." Then he ran.

He was later found by a passer-by on the East Lancs Road with a head injury. His victim was rushed to intensive care at Salford Royal Hospital. She had suffered multiple fractures to her face and jaw. She lost four teeth. She had a lacerated liver. A fractured pelvis. A fractured knee. She underwent surgery. All because she said no to a kiss.

Smyth was jailed for three years, banned from driving for four and a half years and made subject to a 10-year restraining order after admitting causing serious injury through dangerous driving.

Three years. For driving over a woman twice. For fracturing her pelvis, her face, her jaw and her knee. For making her say yes when she wanted to say no — with a car.

💔 HEARTBREAKING | 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐖𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐆𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐨 𝐒𝐭 𝐈𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐅𝐨𝐫 𝐇𝐚𝐥𝐟 𝐓𝐞𝐫𝐦. 𝐓𝐨𝐛𝐢𝐚𝐬 𝐖𝐚𝐬 𝐄𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭. 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐥𝐞𝐲 𝐖𝐚𝐬 𝐅𝐢𝐯𝐞. 𝐍𝐞𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐌𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐈𝐭 𝐇𝐨𝐦𝐞.

It was half term. The Rice family were heading to St Ives — one of Cornwall's most beautiful destinations — for a holiday together. Two little boys full of life and energy, sitting in the back of a car, excited for the week ahead.

They never arrived.
At around 11am on Friday 28 May, the car carrying the family was involved in a multi-vehicle crash on the A30 near Connor Downs in Cornwall. Tobias Rice, eight years old, died at the scene. His little brother Finley, just five years old, was rushed to Bristol Children's Hospital with serious injuries. He fought for five days. On June 2 he lost that fight.

Two brothers. Eight and five years old. Gone within days of each other.
Tobias had just moved up to cubs. Finley was about to move onto beavers. Two little boys who loved school and scouting and life and each other — whose kindness and caring natures touched the hearts of everyone they met.

In a statement issued through police this morning their parents said both boys were full of life and energy and enjoying life to the full. They spoke of the kindness, love and caring natures that touched everyone who crossed their path. They said their two big sisters, grandparents, aunties, uncles, cousins and friends have all been left with a hole in their hearts.

Their parents thanked every emergency service and NHS professional in the South West who helped them at this devastating time. They asked for continued privacy and respect as they face the unimaginable task of laying two little boys to rest.
Police are still investigating the crash.

Tobias Rice was eight years old. Finley Rice was five years old. They were brothers. They were best friends. And they were going to St Ives for half term.

Rest in peace, Tobias. Rest in peace, Finley. 💔

Today — as Lancashire lines the streets of Moor Nook to say goodbye to Junior Slater — a local MP is calling for action to make sure no other family has to go through what his family is going through.

Junior Slater was 12 years old. On May 26 he went to the River Ribble at Ribchester with his friends on a warm summer afternoon — to a spot locals call "the t**h" where young people from the area often gather near the water. He never came home.

In the days following his death footage emerged of youngsters still swimming in the River Ribble in Preston — prompting renewed calls for urgent action on water safety. The Ribble Trust said rivers can change quickly and even strong swimmers can get into difficulty.

Now a Lancashire MP is calling for safe, funded spaces for young people — arguing that children and teenagers need proper places to go during hot weather. Without accessible, safe options — they will continue to turn to rivers, lakes and open water.

Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service have issued urgent warnings — urging the public never to swim in rivers, canals, lakes or open water outside of organised groups — and to call 999 immediately in an emergency.

Junior was the ninth person to die in open water during the heatwave. He was 12 years old. And today — Lancashire says goodbye to him.

His death must mean something. His death must change something.

His sister asked everyone to come out and line the route. To stand together. To give their little blue-eyed boy the send-off he deserves.

Junior was 12 years old. He was the happiest cheekiest soul. He lit up every room.

Following the sentencing of Vickrum Digwa for the murder of Henry Nowak, a senior Sikh leader has issued a defiant message to politicians — warning that the Sikh community has faced daily attacks across the UK in the past week alone.
Dabinderjit Singh, a senior executive at the Sikh Foundation, revealed that since Digwa's sentencing, Sikhs across Britain have been subjected to a wave of targeted attacks — caught in the crossfire of rising anti-immigrant and racial tensions that have gripped the country following Henry Nowak's murder.
Singh has called on politicians to take responsibility and to stop using the tragedy to inflame community tensions further, warning that innocent Sikh men and women — many of whom have lived in the UK for generations — are now paying the price for a crime committed by one individual.
The case has sent shockwaves across Britain, contributing to the ongoing unrest seen in Southampton, Belfast and beyond.

The world of Irish athletics is in mourning following the sudden death of Ciarán Ó Lionáird, one of Ireland's finest middle-distance runners, who was found dead in Montreal, Canada on Tuesday morning at just 38 years old.

The Cork native represented Ireland at the 2012 London Olympics in the 1500m and reached the world 1500m final in 2011. He also claimed bronze in the 3000m at the 2013 European Indoor Championships — cementing his legacy as one of the best Irish middle-distance runners of his generation.

Tributes have poured in from across the athletics community and beyond, with fans and fellow athletes remembering him as a talented, warm and popular figure whose potential on the track was matched only by the person he was off it.

Gone far too soon. Rest in peace, Ciarán. 🙏
