If you haven’t already joined UNISON, it’s worth seriously considering. Membership offers protection, advice, and representation—particularly during stressful situations at work. Knowing you have support can be empowering.

It’s always better to have some level of support than none at all. For around £14 per month, UNISON provides access to a wide range of support, including guidance on sponsorship-related resources, financial assistance or funds if you are completely out of work and struggling to pay bills, and medical and wellbeing packages.

We are all facing different challenges, and no one expects to need help—until they do. When pressure builds and you feel pushed to the wall, it’s important to know you have options and the ability to take action rather than feeling stuck or alone.

The earlier you join, the better. UNISON can only represent you after you have been a member for a qualifying period (usually around one month). This means joining early ensures support is already in place, rather than waiting until a problem arises when immediate representation may not be available.

Can skilled workers establish their own company, register as sole proprietors, put in extra hours, or take on a second job in the UK?
Certainly. You can work unlimited overtime at your sponsored job without having to update your visa.
You may also work up to 20 hours a week in a second job or your own business, provided that the additional work complies with Home Office regulations and your primary sponsored role is maintained.
Within the 20 hours, you are allowed to manage your own business, including administrative duties like generating invoices.

When you reside overseas, your loved ones only see the
"good side." They view the images, the money, the
"better life." However, they are blind to the loneliness, the rejection emails, and the quiet sobs that follow shifts.
The most challenging aspect? The response when you do open up is, "At least you're overseas." Yours is superior. You can be silenced by that one sentence. It makes your difficulties seem insignificant.
But the truth is that there is pain here as well. The same human heart in a different nation.
You are not weak, unappreciative, or dramatic, everyone overseas. You're a human. It's also acceptable to say, "I'm not fine today."
