14/07/2025

Hotel Arts Barcelona, Europe’s uniquely artistic urban resort known for its stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea and its impressive contemporary art collection, unveils its vision for the future that will further enhance its reputation as the gem of Barcelona’s skyline. The hotel embarked last year on a multi-phase, property-wide reimagining project that aims to create a contemporary oasis for tomorrow’s travellers while celebrating its rich history.

The transformation led by design studio Meyer Davis will refresh every space, from public areas and meeting rooms to guestrooms and the spa, with a modern design and refined furniture elements that reflect the hotel’s distinctive identity and sense of place. Today, the hotel proudly announces the completion of the transformation of all guestrooms and suites, including furnishings, colour themes, hardware and other design elements as part of the multi-phase reimagination.

Since opening its doors in 1994, as part of the urban transformation of the city for the 1992 Olympics, the gleaming 44-storey skyscraper has been a prominent feature of the Barcelona skyline. Designed by American architect Bruce Graham, who was also responsible for some of the most iconic buildings in Chicago, Hotel Arts is one of the most luxurious and prestigious hotels in the city, with a two-star Michelin restaurant, a spa, inviting outdoor spaces and a rotating contemporary art collection.

“Hotel Arts Barcelona opened at a crucial time for the city, becoming a symbol of its metamorphosis into a dynamic cultural centre and the region’s premier tourist destination,” said Hotel Arts Barcelona General Manager, Renato De Oliveira. “In line with this spirit of innovation, the reimagining of the hotel embodies our vision for the future in which Hotel Arts continues to evolve and remain a cornerstone of Barcelona’s cultural and hospitality landscape.”

“We are proud to announce the completion of this milestone, just in time for the peak summer season,” added Renato. “Hotel Arts Barcelona is undergoing an evolution befitting Europe’s uniquely artistic urban resort and its status as Barcelona’s architectural landmark. We look forward to welcoming guests to experience the newly reimagined rooms and suites.”

What sets the hotel apart is a combination of personalised and attentive service delivered by a well-connected and knowledgeable hospitality team whose passion and energy always go above and beyond what’s expected. Conceptualised by a visionary architect as a tribute to the artistic legacy of the city, the sleek glass and steel tower stands as the tallest on the coast, its landscaping dominated by the striking Frank Gehry fish sculpture that shifts in colour and appearance as the sun moves – a beloved symbol that will be retained from the original design of the Barcelona skyline. Designed by American architect Bruce Graham, who was also responsible for some of Chicago’s most iconic buildings, Hotel Arts is one of the city’s most luxurious and prestigious hotels, featuring a two-Michelin-starred restaurant, a spa, inviting outdoor spaces, and a rotating contemporary art collection.

A canvas that draws you in

The reimagining is a quiet tribute to Barcelona’s most iconic contrast, shaped by its natural orientation, with “lado mar” (seaside) and “lado montaña” (mountainside) serving locals as a simple, intuitive way of navigating. Deeply rooted in the city’s identity, this duality is subtly echoed in the design of the new rooms and suites. Depending on the room’s orientation, the palette shifts: soft blues and sandy tones for those facing the sea, and warmer, earthy hues for those looking out towards the mountains. In terms of form, both the straight lines of Barcelona’s Cerdà grid and the organic forms of Gaudi’s iconic buildings found its place in the reimagined vision, honouring the connection between old and new while capturing the rhythm of Barcelona’s avant-garde soul. To bring this interplay to life in the rooms and suites, Meyer Davis removed the dividing wall between the bedroom and the bathroom to open up the layout, allowing natural light to flow freely and gently illuminate every corner of the space.

They also relied on craftsmanship to offset the sobriety of Catalan design with subtle exotic motifs. The resulting decor pays tribute to Catalonia’s Golden Age, when the Port of Barcelona opened to the world and embraced influences from distant cultures. It also honours the city’s industrial legacy as a historic textile powerhouse. Particularly noteworthy are the handwoven headboards, created exclusively for the hotel by artist Lorena Canals. Each is a limited edition, one-of-a-kind piece, made entirely by hand. The space is also enriched by delicate ornamental pieces crafted by ceramic artist Rosa Cortiella.

“Drawing inspiration from the textures, materials, and spontaneous energy that define Barcelona, we designed every detail of the guest rooms and suites to reflect a deep connection to the city. We embraced artisan craftsmanship, collaborating with local makers to create custom lighting, furnishings, and finishes that feel both personal and tactile. It was essential to us that every surface and material told a story. One that speaks to the building’s transformation and the rich cultural context around it, ultimately crafting a guest experience that feels unmistakably Barcelona,”

“We wanted to create spaces that feel simultaneously open and grounded – immersive environments that respond to the city’s light, rhythm and vitality. We considered how each element could heighten the experience of the surrounding landscape, allowing guests to fully engage with the views and feel intrinsically connected to both Barcelona and the Mediterranean,” added Gray Davis, Co-Founder of Meyer Davis.

Harmonious discord

The timeless allure of Hotel Arts lies in its unique spirit of contradictions, evident in every aspect – from its location, which is both central and serene, to its design, in which a high-rise exudes a boutique charm, and its seamless blend of leisure and business services. As the reimagining project continues, it embraces its heritage rooted in exceptional service while boldly exploring uncharted territories in art, design and service.

More updates about the multi-phase reimagination journey involving all the public spaces will be shared during the year. To learn more about Hotel Arts Barcelona, please visit www.hotelartsbarcelona.com/en/

The world’s oldest natural pearl and the largest reconstruction of a Bronze-Age designed boat will be amongst the highlights of the new Zayed National Museum in Abu Dhabi.

Fifteen years after its design was first revealed, the Zayed National Museum in Saadiyat Island, Abu Dhabi, is gearing up for its much-anticipated opening in December 2025.

Inspired by the Founding Father of the United Arab Emirates, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan’s conviction that understanding the past was essential to shaping the future, the museum brings the UAE’s ancient history to light; but it's not just in service of preserving a legacy. The museum’s programme follows Sheikh Zayed's mission for fostering greater understanding through research and learning.

Everything you need to know about the Zayed National Museum in Abu Dhabi
“This museum is more than a place of preservation,” said His Excellency Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi. “It is a promise to future generations, a beacon of our identity, and a space where our story is told not just through objects, but through emotion, memory and vision. This institution will carry our story forward for generations to come.”

Located in the heart of the Saadiyat Cultural District, Abu Dhabi, the Zayed National Museum is surrounded by globally renowned cultural institutions that cement Abu Dhabi's role as a key catalyst in fostering cultural equity, inclusion and open dialogue.

The Zayed National Museum stands alongside several globally renowned cultural institutions within the District, including Louvre Abu Dhabi, teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi, the upcoming Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi and Guggenheim Abu Dhabi.

The Zayed National Museum has been designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Lord Norman Foster of Foster + Partners. One of the most important architects of our times, UK-based Foster has close links to the Middle East, having designed some of its most recognised landmarks, such as Alif – The Mobility Pavilion for Expo 2020 Dubai, the National Bank of Kuwait, the upcoming Red Sea International Airport, Saudi Arabia amongst many more.

Honouring falconry, a practice that is an integral part of Emirati culture, the museum's design features five steel wings soaring above the building to depict a falcon in flight. These structures will act as thermal chimneys, drawing cool air into the galleries below. The galleries are enclosed within a mound framed by a faceted concrete structure featuring a pattern inspired by Emirati mashrabiyas.

When will Abu Dhabi's Zayed National Museum open?
The Zayed National Museum is slated to open in December 2025. While a date has not been officially announced yet, 2nd December, the UAE National Day, would be a fitting occasion.

13/07/2025

To help savvy holiday-goers navigate the murky water of cybersecurity when abroad, award-winning airport parking operator Airport Parking and Hotels (APH.com) has revealed its 10 top tips for ensuring cyber safety when travelling.

The tips are available in the Travel Know How Section of the APH website at www.aph.com/cybersecurity and highlight the most useful tricks for ensuring computers, phones and other devices are protected against cyber threats when away from home.

APH’s tips include what to do before holidaymakers leave home such as creating strong passwords and installing anti-virus software, as well as providing tips when away including disabling auto-connect for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and reducing the amount of times travellers share their location.

Before Leaving:

Lock Devices
All phones, laptops and tablets have settings that allow users to lock the device using a PIN number or password, fingerprint ID or facial recognition. Ensuring a strong password is set up before travelling will be the first line of defence against information begin accessed if the device is lost or stolen and travellers should also consider using two-factor authentication for extra security.

Backup Important Data
In our technology driven times, phones and laptops carry everyone’s most important information such as daily to-do lists and contacts and even special photo memories. Taking proactive steps to backup important data before travelling will provide savvy travellers with a sense of relief if devices break or go missing.

Update Device Operating Systems
We’re all guilty of hitting the ‘remind me later’ option when a device update pops up on our screens, but holiday-goers should think twice before doing this when preparing to go abroad. Travellers are more likely to take necessary security risks such as connecting to public Wi-Fi so keeping device operating systems up to date while travelling will reduce the risk of viruses.

Invest In Anti-Virus Protection
Perhaps the easiest and most effective way of keeping personal data secure is installing anti-virus software on devices. Travellers should use a trusted security band such as Norton or McAfee and should make a point of ensuring it is always up to date.

Consider installing a Virtual Private Network (VPN)
When abroad, tourists often have no choice but to rely on public networks to access the internet which means the data generated from using these networks could potentially be seen and stolen, making a VPN a travel must have! VPNs encrypt data so it is impossible for third parties to track users’ online presence. VPNs also allow travellers to bypass geo-blocks making them essential for keeping up to date with TV shows back home (when allowed to do so)!

Whilst Travelling:

Take Electronic Devices In Carry On Bags
It’s easier to keep any eye on your devices when they’re in sight so for peace of mind travellers should consider carrying their tech in their hand luggage whilst flying. But make sure it’s turned off, closed and well protected in a case.

Store Items Securely
Perhaps a given but storing items securely in hotel rooms, ideally in a safe, is essential for ensuring devices are kept away from potential pickpockets.

Be Cautious of Public Wi-Fi
Whilst free Wi-Fi access can be appealing for travellers, it is also vulnerable to security issues. Travellers should take extra caution when using free Wi-Fi hotspots and avoid accessing personal accounts or sensitive data whilst connected. Holiday-goes are also encouraged to disable the auto-connect function of their devices which allows phones and laptops to automatically connect to Wi-Fi networks as they are passed through.

Disable Bluetooth
Bluetooth is a great way of connecting devices and sharing data but it can also be used by hackers attempting to access devices without their owner’s knowledge. Bluetooth connections can be turned on and off according to when they are being used which is great for travelling and maintaining data privacy. It’s a good idea for extending battery life.

Reduce Location Sharing
Finally, whilst it’s tempting to tag the location on all holiday snaps posted on social media, it can create security threats. Signalling locations can make it easy for thieves to determine that homes and hotels rooms are empty, potentially putting personal belongings at risk. Travellers who want to share their holiday location can always consider holding off posting pictures until they have returned from travelling.
