Man r**ed victim following encounter in East Malling pub

An East Malling man has been jailed after he was found guilty of ra**ng a woman who had passed out following a night out in a pub.

Steven Moore exploited and abused his vulnerable victim after they left the premises and he took her to a nearby residential property.

The incident happened in 2017 and was reported to Kent Police in March 2023, when Moore was arrested.

Intoxicated and confused

An investigation established that prior to the r**e, the woman had previously engaged in small talk with Moore who was acquainted with someone she knew.

During an evening between November and December 2017, the victim encountered him at the (former) Rising Sun pub in Mill Street.

They consumed several drinks and she became intoxicated and confused. The victim recalled that after accompanying Moore to a different property she blacked out and woke up to find him ra**ng her.

Moore, now 67, of Stickens Lane, East Malling was charged with r**e and pleaded not guilty. A trial was held at Maidstone Crown Court and a jury convicted him by unanimous verdict.

On 7 November 2025, Moore was sentenced to nine years' imprisonment.

Never too late to report abuse

Detective Sergeant Mike Williams said:
‘Steven Moore deliberately targeted a vulnerable woman, exploiting her trust and intoxicated state to subject her to a truly horrific ordeal. 'His actions were clearly calculated and the impact on the victim has been profound. She has found it difficult to come forward but her tremendous courage has now thankfully ensured Moore has faced justice. ‘We know how difficult it can be for victims of sexual abuse to report such abhorrent and damaging offences, especially when so much time has passed. I hope this case demonstrates that no matter when offences have happened you will always be listened to, believed and supported.’

Security guard jailed for r**e and sexual assault of woman

Shazad Mughal (13/11/1977) of Tansley Road, Crumpsall was sentenced to seven-and-a-half years in prison on Friday 7 November 2025 after being found guilty of one count of r**e and one count of sexual assault by pe*******on.

On Wednesday 10 August 2022, officers received a 999 call from the victim at 12:45am who said she had been sexually assaulted.

The victim asked Mughal, who was working as a security guard, for directions to Manchester city centre after their tram had terminated earlier than expected.

Mughal allowed the victim to use the toilet before sexually assaulting her in his security booth.
The victim managed to flee the scene and call the police, remaining hidden until an officer could locate them.

Detective Constable Luke Miller, of our Serious Crime Division, said: “I would like to thank the victim for reporting this terrible incident to the police and allowing us to conduct a thorough investigation.

“Mughal abused his position of authority to sexually assault a woman who had asked him for help. Mughal claimed that the victim was advancing onto them whilst in the security booth and that he did not want to have any sexual activity with the victim, which was completely untrue.

“I commend the victim in this case for supporting our investigation, which has resulted in today’s sentence and sees justice served against Mughal, who will now spend a significant amount of time behind bars.

“Our officers will provide support, conduct thorough investigations, and take firm action against offenders. Your allegations will be taken seriously, and you will be treated with dignity and respect."

Man from Nailsea jailed after co***ne and he**in seized

FOUR people, including a North Somerset man, have been sentenced after 10 kilos of co***ne and four kilos of he**in was seized, with a street value of more than £1 million.

Those involved in the supply of multi-kilo amounts of co***ne and he**in were sentenced today (Friday, November 7) at Bristol Crown Court following an investigation by the South West Regional Organised Crime Unit (SWROCU).

In January 2022, Joe Hatherall, 32, formerly of Emersons Green, South Gloucestershire, was released from prison on licence having served half of his nine-year sentence for conspiracy to supply cannabis.

Within days of his release, Hatherall was in contact with his network of associates, arranging the movement of he**in and co***ne throughout the South West.

In February 2022, Dean Chick, 37, from Lisburn Road in Knowle, Bristol, was stopped by police on the M5 northbound following an exchange with one of Hatherall’s associates and found with £31,230 in cash.

Chick was sentenced to three years and four months for being concerned in the supply of co***ne.

Hatherall’s main drugs distributor in Bristol was Ben Bicknell, 37, of Whitchurch Lane. Bicknell was arrested in June 2022 and found in possession of snap bags containing co***ne. During a search of his home address, a small amount of co***ne and almost £20,000 in cash was seized.

Bicknell was also forensically linked to three kilos of he**in and 660 grams of co***ne seized from his niece Kasey Cotterell’s address in Hartcliffe, Bristol, the same day.

Stefan Dann, 33, from Greenfield Crescent, Nailsea, North Somerset, was a drugs courier for the OCG. He, too, was forensically linked to the drugs found stored at Cotterell’s home.

The judge handed Dann a sentence of five years and seven months for conspiracy to supply class A drugs.

In September this year, Cotterell was handed a two-year community order for the offer to supply and being concerned in the supply of drugs for the OCG.

Today, Bicknell was sentenced to eight years and three months for conspiracy to supply class A drugs.

Analysis of Hatherall’s encrypted phone showed he played a leading role in the OCG and funded his luxury lifestyle from the proceeds of crime.

He was arrested in November 2022 and recalled to prison. Today, he was handed a sentence of 12 years and six months.

Around 10 kilos of co***ne and four kilos of he**in was seized during this investigation, which would have a street value of more than £1 million.

Approximately £80,000 cash was taken from people working for the OCG, and more than £30,000 in cryptocurrency was confiscated from Hatherall. This money will be used by law enforcement to continue tackling crime.

Detective Chief Inspector (DCI) Adam Smith of SWROCU said: “Through a range of tactics, my team were able to evidence Hatherall’s criminal activity and that of his associates. As a result, his OGC has been dismantled and co***ne and he**in prevented from reaching communities within our region.

“Hatherall has shown a complete disregard for the harm caused by drugs and is driven by greed and a desire to live a life of luxury, which included buying high-value vehicles, designer clothing, cosmetic dentistry, expensive watches, and a jet ski.

“The conviction of all the members of the OCG shows we will be relentless in our pursuit of anyone involved in drug supply, despite the attempts they make to avoid detection.”

Murdered Thomas Campbell's crime family comes crashing down as seven gangsters brought to justice

Lee Campbell, who took over the family business, and six others have been sentenced

Seven members of a drugs gang led by Thomas Campbell before his murder have been sentenced for their part in a £1.6m co***ne supply racket.

Thomas Campbell was brutally murdered in his own home in Mossley, Tameside, in 2022, after his ex-wife plotted with a gang of robbers who pounced on him as he walked into his home.

Following his death, his brother Lee Campbell 'took control' as the head of the Campbell organised crime group, prosecutor Emma Swindel told Manchester Crown Court on Friday.

The hearing ended with Lee Campbell, 43, and six other members of the gang being sentenced for their part in a £1.6m plot to supply class A drugs in north Manchester and Tameside.

Police launched Operation Kilowatt into the Campbell family organised crime group whose 'principle' member was Thomas Campbell until his murder in 2022, Ms Swindel told the court. Lee Campbell then 'took control', the court was told.

Investigators identified a 'graft line', the mobile phone number used to supply drugs, and this led police to other members of the gang who shifted 16.5 kilos of class A drugs between March 14, 2024, and January 30, 2025.

Greater Manchester Police launched a surveillance operation which captured another gang member, Carlo Tommasello, walking into woods at Philips Park in Clayton, east Manchester, on six occasions. On another occasion Lee Campbell was observed going into the woods where he was seen burying a large amount of co***ne.

Police later dug up a package which contained zip-sealed plastic bags containing drugs worth an estimated £6,200.

According to GMP, drug runner Steven Quinn, 'featured heavily in the day-to-day dealing' while Tommasello and another gang member, Kelly Blundell, were said to work closely with Campbell as he ran the business.

Lee Campbell, the court heard, had 11 sets of previous convictions for 18 offences to his name, having served a three-year nine-month sentence for robbery while in 2015 he was jailed for four years for possession with intent to supply co***ne.

The father, who was said to be receiving therapy for his brother's death, was in contact with numbers abroad to source drugs, according the prosecution.

He 'inherited' the business from his late brother and operated as a 'customer of those higher up in the distribution of co***ne', his barrister Ian McMeekin told the court. While on remand, prison bosses had reported the defendant's 'positive work ethic'. He said his client was 'on the road to rehabilitation'.

The Recorder of Manchester Nicholas Dean KC said: "Effectively Mr Campbell was running the family business. He wasn't running a corner shop and nor was he running a hypermarket. It was somewhere between, perhaps a small supermarket."

Quinn, who had 13 previous convictions to his name including one for possession of crack co***ne, who the prosecution say acted as a street dealer 'on a significant scale', had 'little influence on others' in the gang and had 'shown incite' into his crimes, according to his barrister Amy Weir.

Kelly Blundell, a foster carer who answered the drugs line and co-ordinated the supply of co***ne, had acted 'under direction' and her crimes were 'out of character', said her barrister Joshua Bowker. She had found the murder of Thomas Campbell 'difficult to come to terms with' and had got involved in the operation as she had become 'addicted' to online gambling on which she squandered her benefits, said Mr Bowker.

Another gang member, former spray painter Mark McGrath, got involved because of debts accrued from his cannabis addiction, according to his barrister Jane Greenhalgh. The father had acted 'very much out of character', said Ms Greenhalgh.

The youngest member of the gang, Mark Salinger, who was 22 at the time of the conspiracy, was paid £80-a-day as a drugs runner but he was 'at the bottom of the chain', according to his barrister Stephen Spence. He had acted 'out of familial loyalty naively', said Mr Spence.

Another member of the gang, 41-year-old father of two and former deliver driver Paul Taylor, who has spent timed in the armed services until his retirement on medical grounds in 2003, had operated as a 'street dealer', the court heard. He had 18 previous convictions including for possession with intent to supply cannabis.

He had been addicted to co***ne and 'struggled financially' when he became involved 'for a modest wage', said his barrister.

Lee Campbell's gym buddy Carlo Tommasello, 38, operated the 'graft phone' for up to £150-a-day. But there was 'no evidence' he enjoyed a lavish lifestyle', said his barrister Jonathan Duffy.

Recorder Dean told the court: "The conspiracy was led by Lee Campbell. I accept that Lee Campbell took over the business from his brother Thomas who was murdered in 2022. That, it seems to me, amounts to little by way of mitigation although I accept his brother's death will have had a significant impact on him."

He said Lee Campbell had played a 'leading' role as it was 'essentially his business'. The judge told the defendant: "You played without doubt a leading role. This was essentially your business.

"You were operating essentially for profit and the conspiracy involved a really large number of individuals and a really large quantity of drugs."

Lee Campbell, 43, of Lightfoot Walk in Beswick in east Manchester, was jailed for nine years and four months.

Kelly Bundell, 37, of North Road in Clayton, east Manchester, was jailed for two years and eight months.

Mark McGrath, 41, of Heather Street in Clayton, was jailed for two years and eight months.

Stephen Quinn, 57, of Edge Lane in Droylsden, was jailed for three years and four months.

Mark Salinger, 23, of Ladylands Avenue in Clayton, was handed a two-year jail sentence but the sentence was suspended for two years.

Paul Taylor, 42, of Gleneagles Avenue in Clayton, was jailed for two years and eight months.

Carlo Tommasello, 38, of Droylsden Wharf Road in Droylsden, was jailed for four years and four months.

All seven defendants pleaded guilty to conspiracy to supply class A drugs.
