Armed raid of cargo ship off Algarve coast scooped tonne of co***ne

Authorities fear “unprecedented attack” could become new modus operandi

The attack on a cargo vessel earlier this month by masked armed men resulted in the extraction from the ship of a container containing over a tonne of co***ne.

The whole purpose of the raid was to remove the container before the vessel reached port

The ship had been loaded in Ecuador, passed through Cartagena in Colombia, and then crossing the Atlantic in the direction of Spain (Valência).

On the night of September 3, at around 11pm, the crew found themselves under attack by armed men at a point where they were roughly 10 kms off the Algarve coast, near Lagos.

Reports at the time talked of ‘hostages’; of the Navy becoming involved, and of the reasons for the attack being unclear.

That has all since ‘changed’: there were no hostages. The crew followed naval safety procedures and “locked themselves into safe places” – leaving the men to “circulate through the ship, with just one objective: to remove a container with around a tonne of co***ne”, explains Expresso.

“In a short time, the men managed to load the product into the launch that had transported them to the ship. These high-speed launches can transport up to three tonnes of drugs”, says the paper.

By the time the Portuguese Navy arrived, at 6am the next morning, “there was no sign of the criminals”.

Suspicions are that this was an operation mounted ‘against the clock’.

According to a ‘judicial source’ in Portugal, the understanding is that the cartel transporting the drug must have received a tip-off that the vessel was going to be inspected when it reached its destination, and thus decided to make sure it never got there.

Investigators believe the cartel will have subcontracted this raid to a group known as Macacos (Monkeys), “specialists in placing large quantities of drugs into speed boats on the high seas, in order to evade police checks in ports”. But, according to the cargo ship’s crew, the language spoken by the intruders was not one they could identify (definitely not Latin-based in other words, nor English).

Time has moved on since this episode, which surprisingly received very little attention in the national press.

Now, it appears that authorities are concerned that this strike could be a sign of new tactics to come – particularly as controls at ports have tightened, with cartels’ control over customs inspectors weakened.

According to Expresso, there has never been a heist like this in Europe. In France, some years ago, there was the theft of a large consignment of co***ne, “but it took place on land”, at a port. This recent incident showed an unusual level of audacity – and there is nothing to show for it: no sign of the men involved, no sign of the drugs.

Expresso adds that the cargo vessel docked at Sines, for a forensic inspection – to see whether the attackers had left any traces. But it seems that they hadn’t.

The ship went on to Barcelona, and has since crossed the Atlantic back to Colombia.

Three NHS admin workers who made £412k selling fake Covid 19 vaccine records during lockdown are jailed for 10 years

A trio of NHS workers who made £412k by selling fake Covid 19 vaccination records have been jailed for 10 years.

Hakeem Walters, 29, Rokibul Islam, 31, and Muhammed Ahmed, 27, made their fortune while employed as administrators in Westfield Shopping Centre, Stratford.

They falsified records for 847 people at the Covid clinic to allow them to escape government lockdown rules and to travel abroad, Southwark Crown Court heard.

Kathryn Drummond, prosecuting, said: ‘They ultimately make profits at the expense of the wider public at a time of national crisis, namely the Covid pandemic.

‘Each of them held a position of trust at the relevant time as an employee within the NHS.

‘They falsified 1,648 vaccine records relating to 847 individuals. They did so for profit.

‘That enabled those 847 people to enjoy additional freedom in times of lockdown, freedoms reserved for those vaccinated against Covid-19.’

The trio charged people £250 each for fake vaccine records.

Islam had access to the National Immunisation Vaccination System (NIVS), the court heard.

‘Mr Islam sold his confidential login details to Mr Ahmed for £1,000,’ Ms Drummond said.

Ms Drummond added Islam began his work as a Band 3 administrator and clerical bank worker for the vaccine project in June 2021.

‘Every single vaccine record associated with his login was false. He began his work in the NHS at a time of crisis. He obtained wide access. He sold wider access for one thousand pounds. He never created any true or honest vaccination’, she said.

Once the entries were submitted the NHS Covid-19 App showed people were fully vaccinated.

‘That would enable them to travel, attend certain venues, apply for work, jobs that had restrictions in place,’ the prosecutor added.

Sentencing, Judge Sally-Ann Hales said: ‘Between August 17 and December 13 2021 you conspired to hack the NHS computer system to create false Covid vaccination records. You did so to make a financial gain for yourselves.

The evidence indicates that these conspiracies involved more people than just you three.

‘These are serious offences committed during the pandemic... the risk to public health is self-evident, and the harm that may have resulted is also self-evident.

‘The harm was not to any individual victim, or at least none that can be identified. The damage occasioned is to the wider public.’

Addressing Walters the judge said: ‘You abused your position of trust over a number of months. You did so in a sophisticated way, taking steps to conceal what you were doing.

‘It is said that you were not motivated by financial gain but by genuine anti-fact beliefs.

She concluded: ‘These offences are so serious that only immediate custodial sentences are appropriate.

‘Four years on it is too easy to forget how important the vaccine scheme was in preventing deaths and protecting vulnerable members of the public.

‘People no different from your parents who all have health issues.’

Ahmed and Walters were both jailed for four years and four months, while Islam was jailed for one year and seven months.

Islam, of Ettrick Street, Tower Hamlets, Walters, of Brooke Road, Hackney, and Ahmed, of Courtland Avenue, Ilford, East London, all admitted conspiracy to commit fraud by false representation and conspiracy to cause a computer to perform a function with intent.

Couple jailed for £20m drug importation after Ibiza nightclub arrest

A Merseyside man arrested in Ibiza’s Pacha nightclub has been jailed alongside his ex-partner after orchestrating two large-scale drug importations.

Eddie Burton, 23, from Liverpool, was sentenced to 19 years’ imprisonment at Canterbury Crown Court today (26 September).

His ex-partner, 25-year-old Sian Banks, also from Liverpool, was jailed for five years in February.

Their jail terms follow an extensive National Crime Agency (NCA) investigation.

In the summer of 2022, while Burton was living in mainland Europe, two lorries containing he**in, co***ne and ketamine were intercepted at Dover Port.

The drugs weighed a combined 307 kilos with an estimated street value of £20m.

Border Force officers stopped the first lorry on 3 July and found 90 kilos of ketamine and 50 kilos of co***ne packed into boxes and a Lidl shopping bag.

The second lorry was intercepted just six weeks later, on 12 August.

Inside officers discovered 142 kilos of co***ne and 25 kilos of he**in in a fuel tank that had been modified to conceal the drugs.

Its driver, 64-year-old Latvian national Maris Fridvalds, was sentenced to 14 years’ imprisonment in March 2023 for his role as courier in the attempted importation.

Forensics found Burton’s fingerprints and DNA on both drug consignments, and the adapted fuel tank.

NCA investigators initiated a manhunt for Burton, who was living between the Netherlands and Spain after relocating from the UK in early 2021.

He was arrested by Spanish police in August 2023 at Pacha nightclub, Ibiza, for unrelated drug dealing offences. At the time he was using an alias in an attempt to evade detection.

After being extradited to Germany and charged with drug offences, he was returned to the UK in March 2024 by specialist National Extradition Unit officers from the NCA’s Joint International Crime Centre (JICC).

Burton subsequently pleaded guilty to four counts of importing Class A and B drugs.

Banks pleaded guilty to a total of seven charges on 3 February, including importing Class A drugs and money laundering.

She was first arrested in December 2023.

Enquiries as part of the NCA’s investigation found that between June 2022 and October 2023 she travelled to the Netherlands and Spain on a monthly basis to visit Burton.

And a review of her phone evidenced that on two occasions in August 2022 she smuggled co***ne and ketamine into the UK in her luggage after visiting Burton in Amsterdam.

NCA investigators also uncovered messages sent between her and Burton on 5 July 2022 – two days after the first lorry carrying drugs was intercepted.

The messages indicated that she flew out to the Netherlands in late June and prepared the first shipment of drugs for transportation alongside him.

In one message she told Burton that her fingerprints were on the bags of ketamine and he replied, “you’ve never been nicked or had ye prints took anyway so doesn’t matter”.

She was also found to be operating a scam selling doctored Covid-19 travel documents in the height of the pandemic.

NCA Senior Investigating Officer John Turner said:

“Burton, with Banks’ help, attempted to smuggle huge quantities of harmful drugs into the UK, believing he could operate with impunity overseas.

“Banks held a crucial role in the criminal enterprise, laundering the illicit profits and acting as the UK-based facilitator for the multi-million pound drug importations.

“The drugs, had they reached their final destination, would have had a destructive impact on our communities, fuelling violence and exploiting vulnerable people throughout the supply chain.”

Group jailed for combined total of 189 years following double murder investigation

Five men have been jailed for a combined total of 189 years, after murdering two people and attempting to murder another man in Archway in 2023.

Lorik Lupqi, 21 (22.09.2003) of St John’s Way, N19, Abel Chunda, 29 (03.01.1996) of Caldy Walk, N1, Jason Furtado, 28 (18.12.1996) of Halton Road, N1, Eden Clark, 29 (28.01.94), of Huddleston Road N7 and Xavier Poponne, 21 (06.11.02) of Halton Road, Islington, N1 appeared at the Old Bailey on Friday, 26 September after all previously being convicted of murder and attempted murder.

The sentencing concludes an extensive investigation into the murders of 15-year-old Leonardo Reid and 23-year-old Klevi Shekaj.

Detective Inspector Jim Barry of Specialist Crime North said: “Today’s sentencing brings a lengthy and emotional investigation to conclusion. Leonardo and Klevi had no previous involvement with this group and their lives were taken after being mistaken for rival gang members.

“In court, Leonardo and Klevi’s mothers bravely shared the devasting impact that this group’s actions have had on their lives. I commend their strength at this unimaginably difficult time.

“This group of men each played a part in the murders of a young man and a boy. Whether they were carrying the knife used or cowardly tried to cover the rest of the group’s actions, every man here played a part and deserves to be in prison for a long time.”

On Thursday, 29 June 2023, there had been a large gathering on the Elthorne estate to film a music video.
Lorik Lupqi, a gang member from Islington saw this gathering at around 8:30pm and took it as an opportunity to hurt who he thought were gang opponents. He messaged his then girlfriend stating that “opps were outside.” She advised him to remain inside, but Lupqi decided to contact his close friend and gang associate Jason Furtado.

The men then messaged the other gang members, arriving at the scene two hours later when the filming had concluded. Leonardo and Klevi were in the area, along with many other local children and teenagers.

The group then fatally stabbed 15-year-old Leonardo Reid, who sadly died at the scene and 23-year-old Klevi Shekaj who died in hospital. Another man also sustained serious stab wounds.

Following their murders, an extensive investigation was launched with dozens of dedicated officers working around the clock to review CCTV and phone data from the area. This phone data showed that there were 50 short phone calls between this group in the two hours before the murders. After the attack, the four went to Abel Chunda’s house and called organiser Furtado.

Chuna and Furtado were arrested on 3 July with Clarke travelling to the Suffolk coast and changing his appearance in an attempt to evade arrest. Met Officers quickly located him and arrested him on 12 July.

One suspect, Lupqi illegally travelled to Kosovo days after the murders. He had sent messages to his girlfriend, telling her not to wait for him. Met officers worked closely with the Kosovan authorities, the National Crime Agency and the Crown Prosecution Service to extradite him back to the UK and arrest him at Luton Airport on 12 November 2024.

Following Poponne’s arrest in November 2023, damning lyrics were found in a drill song written the day after the murders. These lyrics glorified the murders and made references to elements of the attack which could only be known to those involved. In these lyrics, he also referenced how Leonardo and Klevi were not involved in gang criminality. Shortly after the murders, he also changed his social media name to ‘X3’ referencing the number of people he had stabbed.

Following a 15-week trial, all men were all convicted on Wednesday, 23 July of murdering 15-year-old Leonardo Reid and 23-year-old Klevi Shekaj and attempting to murder another man.

The group appeared at the Old Bailey on Friday, 26 September. All men were sentenced to life in prison, with Lupqi to serve a minimum of 39 years, Furtado must serve a minimum of 37 years, Chunda and Clark to serve a minimum of 38 years.

Poponne was also sentenced for possession with intent to supply, possession of a bladed article and possession of a class B drug and was sentenced to life to serve a minimum of 37 years.

During the sentencing, Klevi’s mother said:
"No punishment can bring my son back or fill the void his absence has created in my life. But a just sentence may perhaps serve as a deterrent to others, and prevent them from inflicting this pain on another family.

“Klevi’s final words to me echoed with a promise; he would be home in five minutes, instead, I was met at my door by officers, delivering news that forever altered the trajectory of my life. No mother should have to endure the agony of burying her own child, particularly due to such senseless violence.”
Leonardo’s mother said:

“I commend all the people that devoted and worked so hard in my son’s murder, all the time and effort spent to piece all the pieces together, I am very grateful and thankful.

“Leo my son was a beautiful, charming, intelligent 15-year-old boy. Just for the fact that another human being can treat another human so poorly, careless, without any disregard only means that you must not be bothered by your conscience. No number of years will ever justify your callous, vicious, and cold-blooded murder of a poor innocent 15 years old boy with his whole life ahead of him.”

Detective Inspector Jim Barry added: “This group of men will now spend a huge part of their lives behind bars for their senseless and violent actions.

“They murdered two people and seriously injured another over a nonsensical belief that they were gang members. Their actions that day will continue to have a devastating impact.”

Pa******le ex-school teacher jailed for multiple child sexual abuse offences

A former maths teacher has been sentenced for the sexual abuse of numerous girls and multiple child sexual abuses of young girls.

Syed Shahreear Ahmed, 36, has been found guilty of 21 criminal charges including, grooming, sexual activity with a child, taking and making indecent images of a child, r**e, and inciting a child to engage in sexual activity and sentenced to 15 years imprisonment, extended for five years.

Ahmed was a maths teacher at a secondary school in Essex until he resigned after his arrest in May 2023.

An investigation by the Metropolitan Police and subsequent prosecution review and analysis of his two smartphones showed that he had been in contact with numerous girls and young women on social media, making arrangements to meet them and engage in sexual activity.

Claire Brinton, Specialist Prosecutor for the Crown Prosecution Service said: “Syed Ahmed targeted his young, often vulnerable victims via social media platforms with the sole aim of grooming them for child sexual abuse. He pretended to be a 16-17 year old male and arranged to meet the victims so that he could r**e and sexually assault them knowing that they were under 16 years of age. He kept imagery of much of his abuse on his devices.

“The lifelong physical and emotional trauma caused to victims by men like Ahmed cannot be understated.

“We would like to thank the victims in this case for coming forward and reporting this devastating crime. I hope this conviction sends a clear message that the CPS will relentlessly pursue justice and prosecute those who sexually exploit children, whenever that abuse took place.

“I encourage any victims of child sexual abuse and sexual violence to report the crimes committed against them to the police. You are not alone and there is always help available.”

Detective Inspector Peter Harvey, from the Met Police’s Specialist Crime – Complex Case and Exploitation, said: “It is due to the bravery of the girls who came forward that we have been able to achieve this outcome and I thank them for providing the evidence needed to ensure Ahmed will face a long term of imprisonment.

“During a long-running and complex investigation alongside Cambridgeshire, Thames Valley, Essex and Kent Police, we were able to piece together Ahmed’s offending.

“He would track children online, before quickly manufacturing a personal meeting and carrying out the most appalling acts on girls as young as 14-years-old.

“A manipulative serial predator, I remain concerned that Ahmed may have committed other offences that have yet to be reported to us.

“I would urge anyone who may recognise this man and believe he may have come into contact with you or your loved ones to please contact us immediately.

“Specialist officers are available to offer support and signpost to external partners. Any reports will be fully investigated and dealt with the utmost sensitivity, care and compassion.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank colleagues from Cambridgeshire, Thames Valley, Hertfordshire, Essex and Kent Police who showed true professionalism and determination and were key in bringing Ahmed to justice.”

To deal with some of the more complex and challenging child sexual abuse cases like this, the CPS has established a dedicated Organised Child Sexual Abuse Unit to share specialist understanding, build strong cases and increase the amount of successful prosecutions.

Barry George charged with R**e and Indecent Assault

The historical allegations against the 65-year-old are reported to have taken place in west London in September 1987.

Barry George has been charged with r**e and indecent assault, following a police investigation.

The Metropolitan Police Service issued a charge and requisition to George, 65, of County Cork, in the Republic of Ireland.

He has been charged with one count of r**e and two counts of indecent assault.

All allegations are historical and are claimed to have taken place in west London.

It's alleged that a 14-year-old girl was sexually assaulted on two separate occasions between 6 and 12 September 1987.

The woman is now in her 50s.

Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy, from the Metropolitan Police Service, said: "These charges follow an investigation by a team of Met detectives.

"Specially trained officers continue to support the woman who has come forward."

George will appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court in London on Wednesday, 29 October.

Nursery worker jailed for child abuse following Met Police investigation

The parents of multiple children have thanked the Met Police for “giving them a voice when they didn’t have one” on the day a woman is jailed for abusing them at nursery.

Roksana Helena Lecka, 22 (13.10.2002) of Avro Place, Hounslow appeared at Kingston Crown Court on Friday, 26 September where she was sentenced to eight years in prison. She was previously found guilty of 21 counts of child cruelty after a Met Police investigation uncovered months of abuse she had inflicted on infants, while working in nurseries.

Detective Inspector Sian Hutchings of Met Police’s Public Protection Command said: “Today’s sentencing concludes a complex and emotional investigation.

“The victims in this case are just babies, with the youngest being just 10 months at the time of the offences.”

“Something which our officers have found shocking throughout this investigation is Roksana’s lack of accountability and her inability to explain her unjustifiable actions.

“As a result of the hard work from our dedicated investigation team and our partners, this woman will no longer be able to harm children.”

Met officers were called to a nursery in Twickenham in June 2024, following concerns from members of staff about Lecka’s behaviour.

As enquiries unfolded, it was revealed that Lecka had been abusing children while working at two separate nurseries between October 2023 and June 2024. CCTV showed Lecka repeatedly pinching and hitting children, shoving them to the floor, pulling their hair, kicking them in the face and va**ng towards their cots.

Fast paced enquiries continued with officers reviewing 300 hours of footage within 10 days. Statements were also taken from the children’s parents, some of whom provided images of injuries found on their children.

After these enquiries had taken place, Lecka was arrested at her home on 5 July on suspicion of child cruelty offences. During interview, she answered no comment to all questions after providing a prepped statement and refused to acknowledge her actions when shown the CCTV footage. She was released on bail and suspended from work while officers within the Met’s Child Abuse Investigation Team continued enquiries.

She was further arrested and interviewed after more evidence came to light and charged on 25 July 2024 with 12 counts of child cruelty, 12 counts of actual bodily harm and one count of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent.”

Following an initial appearance in court, this indictment was amended to 24 counts of child cruelty against 24 separate children.

Lecka was convicted on Monday, 16 June of 21 counts of child cruelty. The jury found her not guilty on three counts.

She was sentenced to eight years in prison on Friday, 26 September and barred from working with children.
Detective Inspector Sian Hutchings added:
“I want to commend the strength of the parents throughout this investigation. I can’t imagine how horrendous it’s been to sit in court and listen to the abuse that Lecka inflicted on their children.

“Despite this, they have acted with grace and dignity and even took the time to record a thank you video directly from the children to DC Geoff Boye and DC Eloise Hand and other partners who supported. In this video, they thanked officers for giving their children a voice when they didn’t have one.

“These parents put their trust in Lecka to care for their children as well as the other staff at the nursery did. Lecka abused this trust and today’s sentence hold her accountable for this.

“I know that our officers have found this a challenging and disturbing case to investigate, and I would like to comment Detective Constable Eloise Hand and Detective Sergeant Geoff Boye for their dedication, compassion and attention to detail which has put this dangerous woman behind bars and protected vulnerable children.”
