🎬 SHOT ON FILM. CUT IN AVID.

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is reportedly the first film shot entirely on IMAX 70mm film — an extraordinary return to analogue filmmaking.

But beneath all that celluloid, cameras and chemical processing, the story still came together in the place it always does: the edit.

Cut in Avid Media Composer by editor Jennifer Lame (Oppenheimer), The Odyssey is a fascinating case study in what happens when one of the most analogue productions in decades meets a thoroughly modern editorial workflow.

THE ODYSSEY — BY THE NUMBERS

🎞️ 2½ minutes — That’s roughly how much film an IMAX magazine could hold before the camera needed reloading.
📷 300 lb / 136 kg — The blimped IMAX camera was so enormous that a mirror system was used to help actors find their eyelines.
🎥 2,000,000+ ft — More than two million feet of 65mm Kodak negative was exposed and processed at FotoKem in Burbank.
✂️ 1,000s of cuts — Lame’s digital Avid edit was ultimately matched back to the physical negative, with every cut recreated by hand.
🎨 6 filters — Colour timing was handled photochemically using coloured filters rather than digital RGB values.
GB 3 cinemas — Just three UK cinemas can reportedly project a true 70mm print, making the format almost as rare as the workflow behind it.
📐 1.43:1 — The full IMAX film frame is dramatically taller than the standard widescreen image, revealing just how much visual information the format can hold.

And then there’s the most important number: 1 Edit.

Because strip away the spectacle, the massive cameras and the 70mm film, and the fundamental truth of filmmaking remains unchanged:

The story lives or dies in the cut.
