So this has been a long time coming, but i’m very proud to announce that I was one of the sound recordists on location with Will Smith for the whole of this series made by Nutopia for National Geographic
The only exception being the North Pole as logistics ruled out a full crew, and I’d been solo sound on the South Pole shoot!
The scope and scale of this production was almost unimaginable, yet an incredible team of people, top of their game in every department absolutely knocked it out of the park to make it happen.
I’d worked with Will before on a couple of eps of Welcome to Earth, and he was on great form again on this series. He brings a great vibe and was charming, helpful and very easy to work with, a real pleasure!
Zaxcom radio mics made sure every moment was locked in audio wise, and the flexibility and compact size of the Nova recorder made it perfect for this shoot.
From the South Pole to the Himalayas, deserts to jungle, boats, helicopters, stunts, monks, tribes, scientists, linguists, and more.
A powerful tale of the beautiful yet fragile nature of our planet, hopefully a strong message about the environment will be the overarching legacy, with a great deal of fun along the way.

3 years ago yesterday I arrived in Antarctica for a truly epic shoot, one of the highlights of my career!
Shooting with 2 x Arri Alexa Mini LF, Ronin 4D, and a variety of Reds for “minicam” rigs, 24hr daylight and temps down to around -30C.
Zaxcom Nova and Zaxcom recording radio mics for flawless and flexible audio coverage at all times.

Not all shoots are created equal!
This one has involved topside reality filming and underwater scuba audio. Divers can communicate using OTS Guardian full face scuba masks fitted with mics and ultrasonic transmission systems - like an underwater walkie talkie. The mic feed is split out into a zaxcom recorder in a waterproof housing, and it records the output of the mic constantly, allowing for a full capture of everything the diver says.
With a boat full of underwater camera team and safety divers, topside cameras and editorial, surface safety and boat crew as well as contribs and sound department, it takes great understanding and cooperation to film like this. It is definitely not for the faint hearted, but is super fun and exciting when it’s all working in synchrony.

Final shoot in my diary for 2025, though I am available again from 14th December and all through January and onwards.

I promise not to bang on about the colour of the water and the sunshine here, just know the sandflies are brutal early morning and sunset.

Otherwise, yeah I gotta admit this is pretty peachy!

These are DJI's Mic 3 - a tiny kit with 2 x wireless mics and a receiver which can pick up these and another 2 mics as well. The mics are about the size of the tip of my thumb. The whole kit is cheap as chips.

I guess they're aimed at self shooters or even content creators, as the mics will bluetooth straight into a DJI Osmo cam or even your phone.

I bought a pair just to try them out - I think as a professional sound recordist I'm supposed to look down on them and assume they're rubbish and have no place in my kit. But they've quickly guaranteed a place in my everyday sound kit and I keep thinking of interesting ways to use them!

Not least, they blew me away recently on a shoot in a super noisy location. These little bad boys have built in noise cancellation, just like your AirPods. I'm sure post has better tools available to get rid of noise on recordings, but they gave me a real peace of mind on location. I was able to hide them on a pair of on screen talent alongside my regular mics. Even the eagle eyed wardrobe dept couldn't spot them. They gave a remarkably tight and clean sound that became my go to audio for a few scenes where I'd have been crying into my headphones otherwise.

Additionally, they're super quick to deploy as spot mics - eg in a sun visor for an impromptu car rig - they have onboard recording with timecode sync as well, mind blown!

You could hide any number of them as plant mics for a hidden camera shoot.

Or mic up a roomful of people in super quick time at minimal cost if you were happy just to pull the files later.

The wireless range is surprisingly good as well (DJI are just nailing everything they do)!

I'm off on a water based shoot from tomorrow for a couple of weeks, I can see these being waterproofed and used in a whole bunch of ways, with boats and cameras in water, I can't wait to play!

I think these are a fantastic tool for self shooters, but also a thing that can integrate into a fully specced setup. I think I'm just looking for excuses to buy a whole load more of them. Feel free to hit me up if you have that excuse for me!

Currently shooting premium doc footage for Nat Geo / Disney +.
2 x Alexa 35’s with Steadicam also. Shooting drama style with full camera dept, video playback, make up and wardrobe departments.

At the opposite end of the spectrum I’m also very happy shooting minimally intrusive PD filmed content, which generates a real intimacy with subjects.

I love it that I have the opportunity to jump between lots of different styles of filming, it always keeps things fresh and flexible. Skills used in one format can always be transferable to others, even when you don’t expect it!

Suddenly my life is all about carnets!! Three in quick succession after months and months without any travel, turns out they’re just like buses!
Quick trip to Monaco yesterday and back today, Italy on Sunday for a couple of weeks and then Bahamas a week or so later.
Very pleased and lucky to be travelling and very grateful the work is rolling back in again!

Not smiling for the photo cos it mis-shapes the moulds until they’re set!
