Survation’s Damian Lyons Lowe was the latest guest on The Political Marketing Podcast, hosted by Benedict Pringle. In their wide-reaching discussion on the role of polling in modern politics, they cut through the noise and addressed pertinent issues, including:
🧠How two conflicting narratives around political research can be simultaneously true: everything is extensively polled and focus grouped, whilst political researchers also continue to base their decisions on gut instincts rather than evidence
🌹The danger for Labour if they chase Reform voters over strengthening their anti-populist coalition, especially considering their 2024 victory was built on a fragile voter base of those who would have rather voted for other parties, but were motivated by anti-Tory sentiment at the ballot box
🏥The importance of credibility and and how Labour’s strategy should be focussed on areas like the NHS, where they are seen more favourably than on issues such as immigration – essential given the party’s and leadership’s low favourability ratings, even going into the last general election
🧩The need for segmentation, accepting the reality that voter groups are not monolithic and that national messaging needs to be tailored, with local campaigns targeting specific segments
🔀Fragmentation making it more likely that tactical voting will cause significant shifts from polling expectations, and that MRP models need to account for these tactical behaviours
🗳️The democratic uplift to the 2024 General Election thanks to polling, which informed voters of viable alternatives in a traditionally two-party system
The Political Marketing Podcast seeks to show how electoral candidates, political parties, and campaigning organisations can win voter support in an era of ever-increasing complexity, with technology, media, and research playing greater roles than ever before.
