British Asian Facebook Groups inspire cultural showcase of the best of British Asian talent.
The largest selection of creativity, diversity and innovation in the British Asian community
will be staged under one roof next month in North West London.
Not quite a mela, but far from a staid department store, Hey Gorgeous events have carved a
firm place on the calendar of keen shoppers in the British Asian community.
Over 100 British Asian stallholders, many of them sole traders, entrepreneurs, and home
businesses, will present their diverse wares during the weekend of March 23rd and 24th at
Byron Hall in Harrow.
This, Hey Gorgeous’ fifth shopping event, is now well recognised as a magnet for craft,
creativity and diversity, supporting new and established small businesses, as well as
“Youngpreneurs” in the community. Organisers are now inviting members of the wider
London community to experience a slice of British Asian culture and creativity as never
before seen in one venue.
Shoppers are invited to immerse themselves in contemporary British Asian culture, and
should arrive ready to browse and buy at this bustling marketplace of exciting ethnic goods
and services.
The event will host upper-end boutiques, bespoke clothing, ranging from traditional to
cutting edge design school graduates, jewellery, wellness, beauty and healing treatments
and services, as well as home ware, tech and food stalls.
So get your best shopping game on, and be prepared to leave Hey Gorgeous with bags full of
the best of British Asian wares.
About the organisers
Zamiha Desai is a woman on a mission to bring Facebook communities into the real world.
Ms Desai is the founder of three effervescent British Asian Facebook groups catering to the
concerns and interests of 135,000 members.
RecommendAsian (a pun on “Recommendation”) is a 60,000-strong Facebook group for
women only.
ProfessionalAsian has a further 60,000 active members referring businesses and
professionals within the community.
MiniAsian tackles issues for parents with young children, in a culturally “safe space.”
Conversations in the groups reflect every day issues in the British Asian community from
lipsticks for Asian skin tones to domestic abuse.
These online communities have unusually high engagement levels, and it’s this very aspect
that inspired the first event.
Inspired by countless stories of entrepreneurship of many of her groups’ members, Zamiha
teamed up with Upesh Patel of Avari Events. Avari Events organises numerous exhibitions,
weddings and private events within the community. The company manages all aspects from
logistics to lighting and room décor. Together they have created the UK’s first forum to
showcase the very best of British Asian creativity, diversity and innovation.
