In one of the most controversial and transgressive works of ‘60s Spanish cinema, Catalan filmmaker Jacinta Esteva Grew created this shocking/compelling journey that is part ‘mondo’ documentary, part anthropological exploration and an entirely defiant refutation of the Franco dictatorship. Shot on weekends between 1963 and 1969, Grew’s film – considered by cinema historians to be an ‘update’ of Luis Buñuel’s seminal LAS HURDES (LAND WITHOUT BREAD) – explores the cruelty and violence at the core of Spanish traditions, from bizarre rural festivals to church-sanctioned urban religious fanaticism. The result is an often-barbaric representation of a frequently backwards culture that contradicted the government’s international presentation of a progressive modern Spain, leading to the film’s heavy censorship and even the forced removal of its original title, EL PAÍS DE TODOS LOS DEMONIOS/THE LAND OF ALL DEMONS. FAR FROM THE TREES is now scanned uncut from the original camera negative provided by Únicamente Severo Films for an all-new and still-potent look at what The Film Society of Lincoln Center hails as “a landmark of Spanish cinema.”
