On VE Day 2020 - such a pleasure to remember taking Major-General Tony Dean Drummond back to Tragino in Italy for Channel 4. As part of X Troop - a group that later became “the commandos” - he parachuted in (at a time when parachuting was still just a circus act). It was a failed mission to blow up the Acqueduct and they all got captured....but Tony went on to escape three times from the N***s (check out book “Return Ticket”). I remember collecting him from the airport in Naples and he told me humorously that the drive back to our hotel in Calitri felt more dangerous than anything he had experienced in WW2. I could not find the button to the overhead light in the hire car and every time I asked him to check the map for directions he had to open the moving car door to activate the internal spotlights as we traversed hairpin bends... “Driving in Italy with Sascha at the wheel”was not on the Risk Assessment - but we got there safely in the end. After all - this was a man who hid standing in a cupboard for 12 nights avoiding ex*****on by the SS when he stumbled on their headquarters by accident ... and walked home from Germany via Spain. I called him the indestructa-cat on the shoot and as Commander of SAS - he was a true gentleman and totally unthwartable. I particularly loved the fact that his wife Mary - despite being told that Tony was seen killed in service by the military vicar - felt so tuned in to her husband she refused to believe it “No we are not doing a memorial - he is still alive - I know he is”. The whole village thought she was just distressed and in denial - but six months later sure enough her Tony walked up the garden path back into her arms. I loved it when he told me that. One of the gazillion WW2 heroes. I doff my cap. What a -Drummond (23 June 1917 - 4 December 2012) @ London, United Kingdom

Well after many moons of taking shortbread biscuits on foreign shoots as “contributor gift offerings” - (an institution that seals all divides... a peace offering that irons out all creases well in advance before they even happen ... a tin of biscuits that unites all cultures in perfect harmony over some dunkage.... ). In the light that the latest draconian anti-bribery ofcom laws say that no gifts are allowed (not even a we**ie biscuit) - I am delighted to see that walkers have brought out a new pocket size version that can slip under the radar. How cute is this box?

And so...if you are not out sipping Pimms on this balmy sunny evening you can stay in and watch My catchily titled: “Pompei Prophecy Countdown to Devastation” on Channel 5 at 9pm. Great fun to make. My leg of the shoot was Directed by the fabulous Duncan Bulling, beautifully shot by Mike Robinson and the hilarious Andy Boas was on sound (who also took this great pic of the decent into the abyss ... The real problem though - just for the record (hello radio times get it right!) is in Campi Flegrei and not Vesuvius at all! 5
