Every year on 15 May, Palestinians around the world remember the Nakba, meaning “catastrophe” in Arabic, marking the displacement of Palestinians and destruction of Palestinian communities during the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948.
In Gaza, the West Bank, refugee camps in Lebanon and Jordan, and diaspora communities across the world, many Palestinians still carry keys, photographs, and memories of villages and homes lost in 1948, with these stories being passed down through generations so that these histories are never forgotten.
As Nakba Day 2026 approaches, we’re sharing some of the many events taking place across London for people wanting to learn more about the Nakba, what happened in 1948, and why many Palestinians continue to remember this day every year.
