RUMS Review is a termly publication- which as the name suggests, retrospectively acknowledges, celebrates and evaluates UCL medical schools current affairs. We endeavour to inform, inspire and intrigue you by providing the platform to explore what matters to you. Top alumni interviews, in depth looks into UCL’s most exciting medical research, topical debates and discussions, tips and advice, raisi

ng issues, creative writing, book reviews and an extensive sports and societies round up are to name but a few of the features to cover our wide spectrum of contents. The magazine is produced by an editorial team composed entirely of students, and we actively encourage anyone who is interested to get involved. Do you have a particular interest or view point? Are you interested in writing, medical journalism or editing? Do you have an issue to raise or a unique experience to share?

STAT!, the RUMS Review Zine, is now accepting submissions for our second zine.

Theme: Shame in relation to medicine, health, and the body

🗓️Submission deadline: Friday 30 January 2026

📝Who we are:

STAT! explores medicine through the arts and literature – poetry, prose, art, and photography.

We are a group of medical students who also write, edit, and design the biannual RUMS Review: UCL Medical School Magazine.

Our first zine, released in Autumn 2025, was related to ‘culture and medicine’. It was printed and distributed across UCL and the UCLMS hospital hubs, and will be digitised soon. See our other Instagram posts for more info.

Join our meeting for our second zine to create our brief on the theme of ‘shame’ in relation to health and medicine.

Physical and mental illness, (in)fertility, mother’s/women’s/parents’ shame, gender and sexuality, neurodivergence, responsibility and inadequacy in medical treatment…come with ideas of any and all experiences of the body, health, and medical practice that have been associated with a sense of shame.

These prompts will be made into a brief posted around campus + online to inspire submissions for the zine (Submissions will be opening later this month! Watch this space.)

We’re delighted to welcome Dr James Smith for our upcoming speaker event!

📅 Wednesday 15th October | 17:30 - 19:00 📍 Sir David Davies LT, Robert’s Building

Dr Smith is an Emergency Medicine doctor and Deputy Director of UCL’s MSc in Humanitarian Policy and Practice. He brings a wealth of experience from his work with Médecins Sans Frontières, and roles at LSHTM and the Johns Hopkins Center for Humanitarian Health.

His work explores humanitarian ethics, global health governance, migration, and crisis response.

Don’t miss the chance to hear his insights from the frontlines of humanitarian and global health work. 🌍
