China is the world's largest emitter of CO₂ — and it is building carbon capture and storage infrastructure at a scale that reflects that reality.

China's industrial base — steel, cement, chemicals, power generation — produces emissions on a scale no other country approaches. Decarbonizing that industrial base requires every available technology, and China's national carbon neutrality by 2060 commitment has triggered investment in CCS that is beginning to match the ambition of the target.

The Guohua Jinjie coal power CCS project in Shaanxi Province — one of the largest coal power carbon capture demonstrations in the world — has been operating since 2021, capturing 150,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year from a 300 MW coal-fired unit and injecting it into saline aquifer formations beneath the Ordos Basin. The Ordos Basin — a vast sedimentary formation in northern China — has been assessed as having enormous potential for CO₂ geological storage and is the focus of China's most significant CCS geological research programs.

China's national CCS roadmap, published by the Ministry of Science and Technology in collaboration with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, targets 10 million tonnes of CO₂ capture per year by 2025 and 200 million tonnes by 2040. State-owned enterprises including Sinopec, CNPC, and China Energy Investment are each developing flagship industrial CCS projects tied to their core operations.

China emits more carbon than anyone. It is now building the tools to capture more carbon than anyone too.

New Zealand is producing clean energy innovations shaped by the specific challenges of a small, remote island nation that cannot afford to get its energy transition wrong.

New Zealand's isolation is both its greatest vulnerability and one of its most powerful innovation drivers. A country at the bottom of the world, unable to import electricity from neighbours and dependent on ships and planes for everything it cannot produce domestically, has a particularly compelling incentive to develop robust, indigenous clean energy solutions.

The University of Auckland and Victoria University of Wellington are producing internationally recognised research in geothermal energy extraction from lower-temperature resources, tidal energy resource assessment, and green hydrogen production from New Zealand's abundant renewable electricity. Contact Energy — one of New Zealand's largest energy companies — has backed a hydrogen electrolysis project using Wairakei geothermal electricity to produce green hydrogen for industrial users in the Taupo region.

New Zealand's electricity system is also a global laboratory for high-renewable grid management. With over 85% renewable electricity in most years and a target of 100% by 2030, the New Zealand Electricity Authority and Transpower are managing grid stability at renewable pe*******on levels that most countries are decades from reaching. The technical and market design innovations being developed and tested on the New Zealand grid are directly applicable to grids worldwide.

Lanzatech — founded in New Zealand before relocating its headquarters — pioneered gas fermentation technology that converts industrial waste gases into ethanol and sustainable fuels, a technology now operating at industrial scale across the United States and Asia.

New Zealand is small, remote, and at the frontier of what clean energy can become.
