Reconstructive surgery encompasses almost all disability, whether it be from injury, burns, cancer or congenital defects. Many thanks to Shan Shan Jing, who has recently returned from the LION project, having been sponsored by BFIRST as a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon attached to the BSSH LION team in Malawi.

Currently there are 3 plastic surgeons in the country and 1 in the capital who serve a large population across the whole of Malawi. There is a dire need for plastic surgeons to cover a spectrum of pathologies.

Shan Shan has been helping with reconstruction of patients under both the LION hand team and the Malawian orthopaedic team. The orthopaedic team see a large number of lower limb trauma cases each day and without appropriate soft tissue coverage of the fractured bones many patients do go on to have amputations.

BFIRST is looking for more surgeons who are happy to help the in LION project and please click the link attached for more information: https://bfirst.org.uk/involved/volunteering.aspx

📢 Exciting Medical Milestone Achieved! 🎉

We are thrilled to announce a groundbreaking achievement in the field of medical reconstruction! Yesterday, our esteemed local team in collaboration with the British Foundation for International Reconstructive Surgery and Training (BFIRST), successfully performed the first-ever breast reconstruction surgery using the tissue reconstruction technique, right here at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC).

This historical procedure was successfully performed on a 54-year-old patient who conquered breast cancer 20 years ago.

The local surgical team, led by the exceptional Dr. Shilindra Rajkumar, worked tirelessly to make this life-changing surgery possible. The team from BFIRST, including Drs. Maniram Rhagbir and Naveen Cavale, lent their expertise and support to ensure the surgery's success.

Through years of research, dedication, and unyielding commitment to patient care, we have achieved a surgical milestone that brings hope to countless individuals who have faced similar challenges. This groundbreaking achievement wouldn't have been possible without the collective efforts of everyone involved!

The successful surgery marks a testament to the power of collaboration and innovation between medical institutions across borders. It also strengthens our resolve to continue pushing boundaries, exploring new possibilities, and delivering the best possible care to our patients at GPHC.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our extraordinary medical team, whose expertise and skill made this historic milestone a reality. We also want to thank the patient and her family for placing their trust in our hands, allowing us to be a part of their inspiring journey.

As we celebrate this achievement, we are reminded of the incredible potential that lies within our local medical community. Together, we will continue to strive for excellence, providing cutting-edge healthcare and transforming lives in ways we once thought were impossible.
