Jason Arday was subjected to a brutal public pile-on, and the British media, right-wing media figures, politicians and celebrities who amplified it need to seriously examine the damage they helped create.
The documents tell a far more complicated story than the lazy โplagiaristโ label being thrown around. Cambridge and Liverpool John Moores had previously investigated the allegations, and Cambridge said Arday had been cleared of plagiarism. Yet the scrutiny, sensationalism and relentless character attacks continued.
And where was the fu***ng empathy? Where was the concern for a human beingโs mental health while his reputation was being publicly shredded?
Nathan Cofnas() helped ignite this latest witch-hunt with his allegations, while his own writings about race deserve serious scrutiny. The Spectatorโs coverage, including Lara Brownโs reporting, also deserves to be challenged over whether it fairly represented the evidence and context.

Following his departure from the University of Cambridge, Cofnas moved his academic base to Belgium. He is currently a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Philosophy and Moral Sciences at Ghent University.
And letโs be honest about the double standards. When white academics have faced far more serious and proven plagiarism scandals, have we always seen the same level of public humiliation and character assassination?
Jason Arday is dead. His family has said that the campaign of misinformation and harassment contributed to the unbearable pressure he faced. We cannot simply shrug and move on.
The media, politicians, Cambridge, other universities and commentators need to fvcking own their part in creating a culture where destroying someone publicly became entertainment.
