Every week, we hear from schools about how much pupils are struggling to make sense of the information they encounter – on social media, in the news, and increasingly through AI-generated content that looks real, but isn’t.

The next UK general election must be held no later than August 2029, meaning today’s 12-year-olds will be voting on their own future.

However, just 5% of teachers told us they feel confident teaching media and information literacy.

Young people must have these critical thinking skills long before they step into a polling booth. We can't wait until it's added to the curriculum in 2028.

That’s why we created TeachKit: Media & Information Literacy, including:

✅ Free progressive frameworks co-created with Media and Information Literacy Alliance
✅ Fortnightly teaching packs linked to current news
✅ 60+ expert-written resources
✅ AI tools to tailor lessons by need
✅ Parent notes for home learning

Get started with TeachKit: MIL from just £199 (RRP £499) and receive a £100 Usborne book voucher for your school. Offer ends THIS WEEK on 30th November.

Can your kid tell if a story is the real deal or made up? 🔍 🦩

In this week's First News, read about the escape of a Cornish flamingo who is now living her life in Florida – but is it fake or fact?

Are you an educator?TeachKit: Media & Information Literacy brings these skills to life in the classroom with topical lessons and ready-to-use resources.Get started in your school from £199 (RRP £499) + a £100 book voucher.Offer ends this week.

🗣 “It’s really powerful for kids to be able to see someone in the media or on TV and think: ‘Oh, they’re like me.'”

Gladiator star Jodie Ounsley, AKA Fury, told us all about her inspiring trip to Liverpool, where she learned how local charities support deaf children.

Currently learning British Sign Language, Fury says starring in Gladiators has put her in a “powerful position to use her platform for good”.

🌍🧒 It’s World Children’s Day! Created by the United Nations and UNICEF in 1954, this day draws attention to the rights, safety and wellbeing of children around the world.

On World Children’s Day 1959, the UN adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child. The relevance of this day has remained significant in the 20th Century – children continue to be affected by issues including poverty, war, and barriers to education and healthcare.

First News' mission is simple – young people are 30% of the world’s population, but 100% of the future, so it’s crucial we provide children with an age-appropriate gateway into the world.

We love hearing from young people in the paper. In this week’s First News, hear from members of UNICEF’s UK Youth Advisory Board on their experience. 📰
