Sudden deaths investigation launched after Coastguard airlift two bodies from beneath the cliffs at Whitby Abbey

Emergency service teams have been involved in the recovery of two bodies from beneath the cliff at Whitby Abbey on Wednesday (30 July 2025) evening.

A member of the public called the police at 7.16pm after spotting a man and woman on the rocks below.

With the tide coming in fast, the Coastguard coordinated a helicopter recovery to ambulance crews near Whitby Abbey. This was completed at 8.24pm.

Paramedics confirmed the deaths, and the bodies have been taken to hospital by ambulance.

Police are on with tracing the next of kin of the man and woman while the investigation continues into the circumstances of the sudden deaths for a coroner’s report.

Witnesses to the incident or anyone with information that could assist officers are urged to call North Yorkshire Police on 101 quoting reference number 12250141734.

Claire was a serving police officer of 19 years who was a dedicated officer, she was hard working and had been awarded a number of commendations throughout her service.

She tragically took her own life after she could see no way out when she was placed under investigation and subsequently arrested.

The shame she felt, the stress and strain proved too much for her as officers feel they are treated by investigating officers as guilty until proven innocent.

The support for officers under investigation is non-existent and, on many occasions, they are made to cut contact with their colleagues / friends who are their support networks.

Claire was isolated from her friends who were serving officers, because of this. Police officers are human and there is a person behind every uniform.

STILL GOT IT!

In policing you always expect the unexpected, but this really wasn’t on The Bill for today…

None other than TV's PC Reg Hollis stepped in to help officers detain a suspect in Southampton!

Let’s just set the scene:

Officers from Bargate NPT were in town when they were alerted by staff at Co-op in Ocean Way to a suspected shoplifter, who attempted to make good his escape on a bicycle.

He then proceeded to fly over the handlebars of said bicycle, before officers pounced to make their arrest.

To their surprise, local TV legend Jeff Stewart came to their aid by sitting on the suspect’s legs while officers put him in cuffs!

Now retired after 24 years in The Bill – but he’s still got it!

While responding to an emergency incident, a Dog Support Unit vehicle was involved in a collision on Stockton Street, Hartlepool, at around 9pm on Thursday 17th July. The incident involved a BMW and the police vehicle, which was carrying an officer and two police dogs.

Both dogs were taken to a veterinary clinic for assessment. Whilst one dog was found to be uninjured, very sadly, due to the severity of his injuries, PD Burt was humanely put to sleep. The officer sustained minor injuries.

A 33-year-old man was arrested following the incident and has been charged with drink driving but enquiries are ongoing as we continue to investigate the full circumstances surrounding the collision. The man has since been bailed to appear at Teesside Magistrates’ Court on 1st August 2025.

PD Bert was a five-year-old Springer Spaniel who had been with Cleveland Police for three and half years using his skills to search for drugs, cash and fi****ms. During his service, he located £250,000 in criminal money in one search alone and was also deployed to London to assist with funeral of the late HM Queen Elizabeth. #

Two men found guilty over the felling of the Sycamore Gap tree have been jailed.

A police investigation was launched after the iconic Northumberland tree was cut down in September 2023.

Daniel Graham, 39, and Adam Carruthers, 32, both from the Carlisle area of Cumbria, were each charged with criminal damage to the tree and also Hadrian's Wall.

They denied the offences but were found guilty on all counts by a jury following a trial at Newcastle Crown Court in May.

Both men appeared before the same court today where they were each sentenced to four years and three months in prison.

Have you seen Taco, the stolen goat?

Late last night (Saturday 5th July), four individuals broke into Buttercups Sanctuary for Goats and stole a newly rescued male goat, who they had named Taco.

Police and Buttercups are now appealing for any information that might help the return of Taco.

Taco had only been with Buttercups for two days after being found loose in a local village. He was very timid & vulnerable. The team arrived this morning to discover he was gone, and CCTV confirmed four individuals had stolen Taco.

Buttercups are extremely concerned for Taco’s welfare and do not believe he is safe in unknown hands

Please help by sharing this post and contacting Kent Police on 101 quoting reference crime number 46/114812/25 if you have any information.

THE FAMILY of a young man from West Yorkshire who tragically died in a collision on the A1(M) earlier this week have paid tribute to him.

Police were called to a one-vehicle collision involving a Seat Leon on the northbound carriageway of the A1(M) near Coxhoe at around 2.20am on Wednesday, July 2.

Dylan Martin Lawson, the 19-year-old driver and sole occupant of the car, suffered serious injuries and, despite the best efforts of the emergency services, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

In a statement issued today, his mum Susan said: “Dylan was the one that made me a mother and was the start of our family. He was a very intelligent, bright, quiet young man who is dearly loved by us all, and made me so, so proud. Dylan was an amazing big brother to his little sister Lydia. They loved each other so much. Dylan was loved more than he can ever know every day. We will never forget him or ever stop loving him, and will miss him dearly every single second.”

His dad Steven said: “Dylan was an exceptionally bright individual and achieved a high score in MENSA at school, and went on to achieve numerous awards including the Richard Harris Memorial Prize for Outstanding Achievement. Whatever he chose to pursue in life, he always excelled. He loved all his family and was a very proud big brother to his sister Lydia. He loved his pet dogs - especially Mario - and was loved by everyone. He enjoyed spending his time outdoors, showing a keen interest in target practice, shooting, and axe throwing, which he was good at. He enjoyed going to the gym with his dad at the weekends, working their biceps and having dad and son time. No time can ever replace the hole that has been taken and can never be filled, but some day we will all meet again, so until then rest in peace, my son. We love you always.”

Officers would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident, or who may have any dashcam footage of the car prior to the incident. Please contact the Serious Collision Investigation Unit by emailing [email protected] or by calling 101, quoting incident number 27 of July 2.

Sad news as the body of a Curtis Davies a serving with Durham Constabulary has been found.

The body was located by specialist search teams in the Shildon area this morning (Sunday, June 29).

Formal identification has yet to take place, but we believe it to be that of 32-year-old Curtis from Shildon.

Curtis’ family have been informed and are being supported.

Help and support is also being offered to Curtis’ friends and work family.

We would like to thank everyone who assisted in the search for our friend and colleague, and who worked closely and considerately with officers on the ground.

Curtis’ death is not being treated as suspicious, and a file will be prepared for the coroner.

Our thoughts remain with everyone who loved Curtis.
