What Happens During Childbirth?
Childbirth is the process of bringing your baby into the world. While every birth is unique, most vaginal births follow these steps:
ЁЯд░ Labor begins. Regular contractions start, helping your cervix soften, thin (efface), and open (dilate).
ЁЯМ╕ The cervix opens to 10 cm. As contractions become stronger and closer together, your cervix gradually dilates to allow your baby to pass through.
ЁЯС╢ Your baby moves down. With each contraction, your baby descends through the birth canal, often rotating into the best position for birth.
ЁЯТк The pushing stage begins. Once your cervix is fully dilated, you'll push with your contractions while your midwife or doctor guides you.
ЁЯН╝ Your baby is born. Your baby's head is born first, followed by the shoulders and the rest of the body.
ЁЯд▒ First moments after birth. If you and your baby are well, your baby is usually placed on your chest for skin-to-skin contact to encourage bonding, warmth, and early breastfeeding.
тЬВя╕П The umbilical cord is clamped and cut. This is often done after a short delay when appropriate, allowing extra blood to flow from the placenta to your baby.
ЁЯМ┐ The placenta is delivered. After your baby is born, your uterus continues to contract until the placenta is delivered.
тЭдя╕П After birth, your healthcare team checks both you and your baby to make sure you're recovering well and to provide any care that's needed.
Every birth is different, but the goal is always the sameтАФa safe delivery and a healthy mother and baby.
