One of my favourite Pais wines from Bio Bio 🍷🇨🇱

I love Pais, it’s such an underrated and delicious light red. And this Millapoa from has all the best qualities of the variety - fresh, juicy and with a fine spine of dusty tannin and bright notes of wildflowers, rosemary and bramble fruit.

A brilliant wine to served slightly chilled in a summer’s garden 😋🍷

One grape variety, one region, one producer, three very different wines… 🍷

Malbec is such a versatile grape variety, and winemakers in Argentina are increasingly exploring its many faces. As a brilliant example, makes this brilliant trio from Gualtallary well worth exploring:

Gaia is a juicy, vibrant and pure Malbec - with gorgeous notes of violets, minerals and forest fruit. Fresh and so easy to drink, it’s the perfect summer wine to drink slightly chilled. With both Regenerative and Biodynamic certifications, it’s also a bargain at Waitrose for £18.

Ameri is the top of the line, and more structured and complex. Ripe bramble fruit is framed by oak spice and cedar, definitely making it a wine to enjoy with a juicy steak or lamb asado.

And finally the fortified late harvest Malbec, a Bousquet family tradition and a really nicely balanced dessert wine with sweet dried fruit notes and chocolate. Perfect with cheese or chocolate!

A Malbec for every mood 😉🍷

When the ferment gets a bit over excited… 🍇 💥

Harvest is well underway in Argentina, and the ferments are bubbling away too - sometimes a little too actively 😂

This is a Malbec from Altamira in winery - thank you to winemaker for sharing the fab photo 🙌🍷

Just in case you ever doubted how big the book is… Pierre and his pooch put it into perspective - almost as big as a Christmas Tree 😂 🎄

Thank you for the lovely photo 🙌 Happy holidays, happy wine drinking, and happy holiday planning 😎🍷

Always a goodie… This lovely white blend using mainly Naughty & Nice Tokaj Friuliano from Uco 😋🍷

Nice, because this rendition by is oily, silky and perfumed with white blossom and citrus zest. A touch of Sauvignon Blanc in the blend adds a fresh acid pulse throughout. Richness with lightness.

Naughty because Argentina got told off for using its name ‘Tokaj Friuliano’ by the Hungarians, who say it is too close to the name of their Tokaji wines… now it has to be labelled by a synonym here (Sauvignon Vert, Sauvignonasse, Friulano). Same delicious wine though 🙌

Pais is so versatile… with fine tannins, and subtle forest fruit and wild herb notes, it’s brings out the best in dishes like this cherry & basil burrata and roast asparagus with romesco sauce 😋

This Pais is one of my favourites from Bio Bio, from 150 year old vines and subtle but engaging. A real gem in portfolio by .jordan.52

And perfect served with the delicious bites at my favourite Mendoza restaurant (now sadly in its last month!!!) 🍷

There’s still time to order your loved wine one their own copy for Christmas 🎄🍷✨📖🥂

There’s less than a month until Papa Noel makes his rounds around the chimneys of the world, so whether you have been naughty or nice this year, make sure to get your order in for The South America Wine Guide on time - and leave a nice glass of Malbec out next to the mince pies 🎅🍷

Who doesn’t love a handwritten letter? And who doesn’t love well made old vine Pais? 🍷♥️

I am huge fan of this traditional variety in Chile, especially when it comes from ancient vines and is made by winemakers with soul.

Thank you Peter and for sharing the old vine wine (planted before 1900), and your story of seeking out tradition and authenticity 🙌🍷

The search for certain soils is perhaps most prevalent of all in the Chardonnay wines of Mendoza’s Uco valley… and this boney Chardonnay by Matias Riccitelli is a delicious case in point 😋

Focused and with a bristling acidity and taut tension, there’s a smokey mineral edge which makes it even more engaging after some time in bottle.

A great example of why the calcareous-laden vineyards of Gualtallary are a top cru for South American Chardonnay 💪🌎🇦🇷

You know spring has arrived when the yellow rose emerges besides the beautiful old vines of Tannat 🙌 🌹 🐥

There is one bunch of flowers I await eagerly each year to receive… not in person, but virtually! Winemaker Gabriel Pisano has sent me a photo of this rose among the Tannat vines since 2021 (scroll for the photos 2023, 2022, and 2021) and each year it is such a beauty to see! Gracias Gabriel 🙌

It has come a little early this year, usually the blossoms first emerge in November or late October… I guess spring has arrived early in Canelones ☺️

The wine made from these vines, Viña Progreso’s Old Vines Tannat, is pretty glorious too - well worth hunting down 🌹🍷

Where do you read yours? 🤓

If you are taking the train up to Machu Picchu you may want to bring some light reading… it isn’t quite so light (1.5kg) if you are hiking, but will add to your cardio work out 😉
