Stolen 100-Year-Old Rolls-Royce Recovered in Essex Yard After Three-Day Police Hunt
Pride and joy of 82-year-old enthusiast found under tarp in Tilbury after vanishing from hotel car park
A century-old Rolls-Royce valued at over £300,000 has been found by Essex Police, just days after it was stolen from a car park in Orsett.
The Silver Ghost, described by its owner as “irreplaceable”, was discovered in an outbuilding in Tilbury, hidden under a tarpaulin and still sitting on the trailer it was taken with.
The vehicle, which vanished in the early hours of Thursday 26 June, was en route to Helsinki for a European tour when it was stolen. Its owner, 82-year-old Brian Fitton from Cheshire, had been staying at a local hotel overnight and awoke to find his prized possession missing.
“I was shocked to find my beautiful car gone,” Mr Fitton said. “I’ve travelled the world in that vehicle for the past 25 years. The support I’ve had from the public has been unbelievable.”
Following a tip-off that the stolen car might be in the Tilbury area, Essex Police’s Thurrock Neighbourhood Policing Team secured a warrant and launched a rapid investigation. Within three days of the report, officers located the vintage Rolls-Royce, complete with its original features and distinctive silver bodywork.
Sergeant Curtis Price, who led the recovery, said: “Thanks to our swift response, we were able to locate and recover the stolen vehicle safely. It’s always a positive outcome when we can return property to its rightful owner and prevent further criminal use.”
Thurrock District Commander Tony Atkin added: “We know how distressing it is to have your car stolen, whether it’s a vintage model, a work van or a family vehicle. Vehicle theft is often the start of more serious crimes. Every car we recover helps disrupt wider criminal networks.”
The car, a 1920s Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost, is considered a rare gem among collectors. Police confirmed that both the trailer and the vehicle were intact.
Essex Police are continuing to investigate and have appealed for anyone with information or footage relating to the theft to come forward.
