The BPI

The BPI BPI represents the UK’s recorded music industry.

We also organise the BRIT Awards and Mercury Prize Awards, co-own the Official Charts and award UK sales certifications through BRIT Certified. BPI promotes recorded music in the UK & worldwide and champions the rights and interests of over 500 members including hundreds of independent labels, the UK's three major record companies Sony Music, Universal Music and Warner Music and a number of other

music companies. BPI membership accounts for around 85 per cent of the recorded music consumed in the UK – the world’s third largest music market – while in 2018 British artists claimed one in every eight albums sold around the world. BPI’s Content Protection work and portal helps to protect its members’ recorded music content whilst its Research Department publishes BPI’s annual Music Market yearbook and monthly market reports as a leading source of authoritative industry data. BPI further supports its members with free training courses to ensure they are up-to-date with changing industry trends. To promote British music overseas, BPI works with DIT and other partners to organise a series of international trade missions, providing members with the opportunity to break into new markets and grow their business. BPI also administers the Music Export Growth Scheme (MEGS), which to date has distributed over £4.6m in support of around 300 UK music projects, generating £55.5 million in exports revenue for the British music economy. BPI owns and organises the annual BRIT Awards, with substantial proceeds going to the BRIT Trust, BPI’s charitable arm that has donated over £16m to education-related causes, including the world-famous BRIT School, Nordoff Robbins and War Child. BPI works with and supports a wide range of community-focused initiatives and organisations, including The BIG Music Project, and Creative Access, which promotes diversity across the industry. The BPI is now also home to The Mercury Prize, while it co-owns the Official Charts with the retailers’ association ERA. BPI administers the iconic Platinum, Gold and Silver Awards Programme, which certifies recordings as they achieve various milestones.

The entire music industry is united in calling for Sir Keir Starmer and his government to take urgent and decisive action on business rates before ticket prices soar and venues close.

We have come together today to sign a joint letter to the Prime Minister: https://bit.ly/MVTopenletter

Why?...
Because the new 2026 Business Rates revaluations will force a £7.2 million tax hike onto UK Music Venues.
For hundreds of stages this is a closure notice.

We stand together to demand urgent action:
Fair Business Rates relief and a valuation system that recognises cultural impact, not just commercial property value.

This is a pivotal moment for the future of British music.
And we need your support.

BPI is pleased to be a member of the newly formed Cultural Exchange Coalition 🤝

The EU is a crucially significant market for the UK’s music industry. After the US, the countries in the EU collectively deliver the greatest value to the UK economy in recorded music exports and similarly, Europe is the second largest region for funded activity through the BPI-administered Music Export Growth Scheme. Ensuring frictionless trade and touring between the UK and EU must be a top priority if the music industry is to deliver on the UK Government’s growth ambitions as set out in the Sector Plan.

Now is the time for UK and EU policymakers to come together with industry to tackle this issue which has for too long been harming the potential of the UK’s music industry.

Manchester represent 👏 Introducing this year's stunning BRIT Awards 2026 trophy, designed by Manchester-born Matthew Williamson 🎉

As the show moves to Manchester's Co-op Live for the first time, Matthew Williamson tells us how his trophy design reflects the spirit of the BRITs new home 🏠

"I wanted to create something timeless and stylish that each recipient would feel proud to own and display. Whilst colour and pattern may have been a more predictable route for me, I wanted to pause, take stock and offer something truly personal to me. Above all, I wanted to ensure it connected to Manchester, the BRITs’ new location and my hometown.

Cast in a chic amber toned resin, the statue resembles the golden honey of a worker bee, Manchester‘s logo symbolising the city's role during the Industrial Revolution and so much more. This spirit to work hard and be part of the essential fabric of the nation still resonates with me today. The BRITs also represents the global reach of British music and so I designed the statue to sit on top of a globe. I imagine each deserving winner will feel on top of the world as they receive their award and I cannot wait to see the trophy I designed being part of the celebrations on the night."

As Black History Month comes to an end, the BPI spoke to Mixtape Madness about the work they do in the music community at the heart of Black British music and culture 🤝

"Founded in 2010 by friends Kwabz Oduro Ayim, Kingsley Okyere, and Eddie Agyeman in London, Mixtape Madness set out to build an open, accessible platform for people in the UK rap space to upload their music to a dedicated audience. The mixtape era had already taken off in the United States with websites such as Dat Piff and Audiomack, but Mixtape Madness strived to deliver this for more localised genres in order to bring them to new heights. Throughout the last fifteen years, the company has been at the forefront of Black British music, delivering as a label, website, and social platform.

At its core, Mixtape Madness has become a talent incubator. For the past 15 years MM has helped to unearth talent across music, from artists to journalists and record executives. From freestyle platforms Mad About Bars, Next Up?, and The Cold Room, there have been countless artists who have stepped through and raised their profiles exponentially, including the likes of household names Headie One, Digga D, and M Huncho."
