The Icarus Factor. I write this in the 2nd hour of trying to get my daughter asleep in the hot evening. I currently have the same bitterness and resentment Riker had for his father. This is probably why some enjoy this episode for the relatability.
If you're looking for a sci-fi story, this isn't it. If it's for a soap opera styled story, this is it.
There is some great parts to cherry pick from this episode, such as Worf yelling at Wesley, Wesley tricking Data into finding out what's wrong with Worf which results to Worf's second outburst, this time, at Data.
The B plot with Worf being annoyed with everyone as they forgot about his 'birthday' is the main highlight for me. It's great seeing Worf lose it and how the crew came together for him.
The main story revolves around Riker and his daddy issues. Something about abandonment and losing to his Dad playing Ambo Jitsu when he was a kid.
There is a lot of tension throughout the episode concerning Riker leaving the Enterprise for a new command as well as his anger toward is father, but it seemed to be resolved very quickly after a fight. Father and son hug it out and Riker decides to remain on the Enterprise. Huh?
One thing that would have been interesting in a future episode would be a story behind his mother's death. Riker states to Kyle Riker 'that it should have been him' who died and not her.

What are your thoughts on this episode? Was it as unbearable as painsticks or does it rock like those Ambo Jitsu outfits?

GIVE ME GENESIS PODCAST UPDATE

Hi All Viewers, Listeners / Friends / Trekkies / Readers,

I trust you are well. Thank you all who watch and listen to our content. I wanted to provide an update regarding the Podcast.

Due to the usual demands of life, it has been decided to reduce the weekly release of TNG reviews to bi-weekly. The desire is still there to release weekly podcast, and that may change again in future, but the editing required as well as maintaining a marriage, a young family, full-time job and in the process of buying a new / selling our home, I have come to release that maintaining a weekly schedule podcast release is not sustainable.

As this is a hobby, I am learning as I go and things go wrong along the way or things don’t go to plan, so I need to allow for time for these this as well.

From this Monday (16th June 2025), there will be no weekly podcast broadcast and will resume with a bi-weekly scheduling from 23rd June.

Early access will still be provided to those part of Patreon.

I will still be maintaining regular social media Facebook / Tik Tok / Instagram posts and releasing shorts on the YouTube channel.

The Royale: This season 2 episode is an episode which is quite divisive within the fandom. It is either incredibly loved by some or extremely hated by others.
For me.... I don't hate it or love it, I am confused by the episode.
I enjoy the mystery of the structure and an isolated revolving door at the start, but it goes a bit silly when entering the casino. When inside, Worf easily steals the show in moments, especially the scene in the hotel room.
For me, Data playing craps, seems like Brent playing craps, but I will allow it's early TNG.
It's not an episode I would regularly rewatch.
My thoughts are that those who like fun episodes like it more than serious Trek fans. Andrew is the former, I am the latter.
Let us know your thoughts. Is this true? Is this episode your absolute favourite; a top ten episode? Or does this episode disgust you? 😂
Let us know in the comments.
