Usborne is an independent family business founded by Peter Usborne in 1973. It is the largest independent children's publisher in the UK.
When Peter got a call from his wife saying he was going to be a father, he immediately decided to move into children’s publishing so that he could create colourful, exciting, captivating books for a new generation of kids – including his own.
More than four decades later, Usborne books are known and loved by families all around the world.
Peter is now in his eighties but is still working – and loving it. The baby he received that phone call about – Nicola Usborne – is now our Deputy MD, working alongside her dad and a longstanding senior team.
Usborne books are almost all created by a super-talented team of 35+ editor/writers and over 50 designers who work in-house for Usborne. This makes us different from most other publishers (who usually commission outside authors to write books for them) and allows us to have complete creative control.
There are now over 3,000 Usborne books in print, including non-fiction, fiction, novelty and baby books; Peter was awarded an MBE for services to the publishing industry in 2011 and a London Book Fair Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015.
Usborne also has an extensive international publishing programme, with books published in French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Brazilian Portuguese, German, Korean and Chinese under the Usborne brand; rights to Usborne books have been sold in over 100 languages, and our English language books are distributed worldwide.
