Founded in 1973 by Peter Usborne, Usborne Publishing pioneered a completely new generation of entertaining, colourful and friendly non-fiction books for children. Peter was awarded a London Book Fair Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015, and a CBE for Services to Literature in 2021. Usborne also

Our Story

Usborne is an independent family business founded by Peter Usborne in 1973. It is the largest independent children's publisher in the UK.

When Peter got a call from his wife saying he was going to be a father, he immediately decided to move into children’s publishing so that he could create colourful, exciting, captivating books for a new generation of kids – including his own.

More than four decades later, Usborne books are known and loved by families all around the world.

Peter is now in his eighties but is still working – and loving it. The baby he received that phone call about – Nicola Usborne – is now our Deputy MD, working alongside her dad and a longstanding senior team.
